WASHINGTON - U.S. rail shipments continue to drop, according to the Associated Press.
The Association of American Railroads said Thursday (Dec. 11) that freight carried on the tracks for the week ending Dec. 6 totaled 301,120 cars, down 8.5 percent from the same week a year ago. Shipments fell 10.1 percent a week earlier.
The trade group reported significant declines in shipments of metal, automobiles and lumber.
Volumes sank 13.6 percent in the East, where freight is mostly hauled by CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp.
So far this year, shipments on U.S. rails are down 1.5 percent compared with the same period in 2007.
Norfolk Southern operates approximately 21,000 miles of tracks in Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and 20 other states.

Damn near everything 'cept coal! Which continues its outward bound journey ta Roberts Bank, British Columbia, and onwards ta the Asian regions. Look for more Kias, Hyundais, Subarus, and a few containers from China next year!
Grain still being loaded for overseas... Probably Asia as well, but not nearly as much as '07.
