2 trains collide in Winona County; cars fall into river

At least 40 cars were derailed and some went into the Mississippi River in the 5:30 a.m. crash near Dresbach, officials say. Liquid ammonia and propane are leaking from some of the cars.

Last update: December 17, 2008 - 9:34 AM

Two freight trains collided head-on before dawn this morning in extreme southeastern Minnesota, sending some of the 40 or so derailed cars into the Mississippi River, authorities said. Liquid ammonia and propane are leaking in the wake of the crash, which occurred about 5:30 a.m. crash in Dresbach, but there are no known injuries and evacuations have not been necessary, said spokesman Dave Belz of Winona County Emergency Management.

The north-south tracks run parallel to the river and Interstate Hwy. 90, where traffic continues to flow normally, Belz said. The tracks are about 20 to 30 feet up a slight embankment from the river, he said.

The trains are owned by Canadian Pacific railway, based in Calgary.

Two train crew members were taken to a hospital but only as a precaution, said CP spokesman Mike Lovecchio. "We are not counting them as injuries." At that spot, Lovecchio said, there is a siding (tracks that act as a passing lane). "How these two trains made contact with each other is obviously part of the investigation," he said. "We will be doing a comprehensive investigation and cooperating fully with the investigating authorities."

La Crescent Fire Chief Bernie Buehler, the incident commander, said one train coming from Portage, Wis., was pulling 100 cars, the other was coming from La Crescent, Minn., and carrying 15. Out of the 115 train cars, crews could see 49 left standing, Buehler said.

Belz said this is the first crash of this type "that I'm aware of" in his 30 years in law enforcement in the area.

With the arrival of daybreak, Belz said, emergency personnel are turning their immediate attention to containing the leaks and retrieving the cars in the river.

Dresbach is about 150 miles southeast of the Twin Cities.

Accident involving 2 trains injures 2 in Minn.

DRESBACH, Minn. (AP) Authorities say an accident involving two freight trains has injured two people, set off a propane leak and caused some railroad cars to fall into the Mississippi River.

La Crescent Fire Chief Bernie Buehler says the accident happened about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday near Dresbach, at the southeastern corner of Minnesota.

Buehler says two railroad employees on the trains were injured.

The immediate area has been evacuated because the accident caused a propane leak at a switching station. Winona County Emergency Management spokesman Dave Belz says liquid ammonia is leaking from some cars, too, but isn't a public danger.

Buehler says one train had 100 cars, and the other had 15. Some of the cars ended up in the Mississippi River. Crews could see fewer than half of the cars left standing.

It can't be that THAT cold, the report said the cars went INTO the river, not ON TO. So much for your "frozen" statement.

Seriously though, that cleanup has got to suck balls.

Wow..... that is no small fender bender......  I'm sure glad the CP doctors were able to treat the crew members with non prescription Advil and heating pads so their injuries didn't count.....

Dark territory? Signalled? Who they gonna blame, the freight train or the local. I sure hope those comments about their non-injury injuries have some element of truth to them, they'd be most fortunate.
