SD45-2 rebuild?

I thought the SD40-2's were going the way of the buffalo and the Chrysler, when I caught this swoosh-painted SD45-2 at the west end last Sunday.

I looked it up online and saw she was now a SD40-2R, the former BNSF 6489, etc. Still looks really weird to me, but I'm for anything that keeps the old girls pulling their weight. Are there any more of these running around?

Think of it as a tow truck for that GE-unk behind it.

Most of the 45's are getting 16 cylinder engines when they are rebuilt..  This one with the R on the end is set up for Remote op's in a yard..Looks like a little table behind the air conditioner that has the radio antenna's on it..  Got some through the shop that are going to Pasco,wa that were SD40's that are now termed 39-2R..  They have cut back on the HP's but left the turbo's in just so Uke will have a steady job...

They use the 45's as hump power at Assylum Island.

Sounds like what CSX is doing to the SD50's. Put a bolt in the turbo so it can't spin, reset the rack for better fuel mileage and 3000 HP..call it a SD50-2 and say its equivalent to a SD40.
Also the GP-40's are getting the same bolt in the turbo and rack adjustment, cut back to 2000 HP and call the resulting bitch a GP38-2S.
Oh the black smoke Gods will be Pissed off!!

The 45-2 had straight radiators. That looks like one of the ex-EL SD45-2 that Gonerail used to use as helpers on the mtn at Altoona.
They got an ammeter that has NO REDLINE!! You put that bitch in notch 1 and the wheels are going to turn. They are very good hump engines...tho a waste of HP.

Cy used to see that stuff all the time on the EL mains, pulling EL trains, while setting and waiting for them to clear the diamond, in two different locations. Today, you'd never know the railroad was ever there in one of the two locations.

Shot of the passenger train is the same location, only looking the other way.

It doesnt look like a remote to me. It doesnt have the woopie light or scabpack equipped scralled all over it. A buddy of mine works down in Pasco, he is going to love getting those remotes.

Actually we have had at least two of the old cow engines that were the cow/calf hump's they used down there mod'ed at the shop for remote operation from the tower.. Meaning the man in the tower is going too operate the unit.. I assume that there would be some kind of ground man, but I'm sure if they could get around that somehow they would...

The Arbitrator said pitch and catch only. How could the pitcher or catcher prevent bypassed couplers, make cuts, etc from the tower?
Sounds like tower guy is gonna run under guidance of someone else..in that case the operation should convert to Conventional with an Engineer...

My, my, Calvin's cracking jokes early on New Year's day. Those MARRCO's and their SCABCO's follow Vernon like dogma, don't they?

I'm thinking of training on that RCO thing. Seems like the new crop of guys are running around on those things for a quit. I want to put a stop to that.

All the oldhead yard monkeys dog the shit out of the scabpacks, but the young guys will run their beans just to get a 12 hour quit.
