BNSF Railway locomotive engineer Lenard E. Noice, a member of Local 1168 in Clovis, N.M., died Jan. 16 after an incident that occurred while he was on a run between Clovis and Ft. Sumner. He was 59 and planned to retire in February 2010.
Circumstances of Noices's death are under investigation.
He was a really good person, New Mexico State Legislative Director Dennis Baca said. He was a person you could count on; he was one of the good guys. He will be missed.
In 1973, Noice was hired by The Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company (AT&SF) as a laborer. In May 1980, he was promoted to locomotive engineer. He was an employee of the BNSF Railway for 35 years.
In July 1973, Lenny met Carla Marin who was also employed by AT&SF in Clovis. They were married in September 1975 and their only son, Lenny II, was born in August 1977.
Noice loved radio-controlled cars, airplanes, gliders, and stunt kites. He was an avid sportsman, fisherman and a skilled photographer. Lenny loved camping, hiking, picking pinon nuts, exploring the Pecos wilderness on his 4-wheel ATV, and riding his Harley Davidson with his twin brother, Kenny; his wife, Carla; his son, Lenny II; and his nephews, Ken and Brian.

Services for Noice will be held Fri., Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. at the New Covenant Church, 7201 Paseo Del Norte N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87113. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A reception will be hosted at 3 p.m. at New Covenant Church.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. A freight train struck and killed a worker operating a jackhammer on the railroad tracks near Meteor Crater this morning.
Coconino County Sheriffs Office spokesman Gerry Blair confirmed that the victim was a member of a three-man crew working on the BNSF tracks when he was struck by the westbound train at about 10:45 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. The other workers were not struck or injured.
The accident occurred on tracks about a mile north of Interstate 40 near the Meteor Crater exit. It was not visible from the highway.
Blair could not provide any further details on the victim late this afternoon, pending further investigation. Next of kin had not been notified.
The case remains under investigation by CCSO, BNSF police and the U.S. Department of Transportations Federal Railroad Administration.
