STB authorizes Grand Elk Railroad in Michigan

The Surface Transportation Board took action that paved the way for the creation of the Grand Elk Railroad, which allows for millions of dollars of investment for western Michigan and the creation of 58 new jobs. The Grand Elk Railroad is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Watco Transportation Services, Inc., a short line railroad holding company headquartered in Pittsburg, Kan.

The transaction approved by STB was a lease of 122.9 miles of track by Watco from the Norfolk Southern. The railroad will operate from Grand Rapids, Mich., to Elkhart, Ind.

Since the Grand Elk began accepting applications, more than 1,600 applications have been received to fill the 58 available jobs. These positions will primarily be located in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Grand Rapids. The Grand Elk will be headquartered in Kalamazoo.

Terry Towner, president of Watco, named Rodney Gordon general manager of the railroad and Shasta Stump vice president of sales, both based in Kalamazoo. Gordon was formerly with Canadian National. Stump led the sales and marketing effort for several of the Grand Elks sister railroads in Kansas and Oklahoma.
