Seaboard, NC -- A freight train has derailed in northeast North Carolina, but no injuries have been reported.
Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent said between 12 and 15 cars on the 94-car train fell off the tracks around 3:30pm Monday near Seaboard. The town is just south of the Virginia border.
Vincent said the CSX Corporation train derailed in a mostly rural area near Interstate 95, but a portion of the roadway was cordoned off as a precaution.
CSX spokesman Garrick Francis said the cars that derailed were carrying "mixed freight," but didn't contain any hazardous materials. He said the train is based in Rocky Mount and travels on a route that circles back to the city.
It's unclear why the accident occurred. Francis said he didn't know the train's destination.
