Louie Bellson, 84 , widely considered one of the worlds greatest drummers,
who played with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and
Count Basie, died Saturday (Feb 14). A six time grammy nominee who
performed on more than 200 albums and wrote more than a 1000
compositions and arrangements and a dozen books on percussion.
His discography spanned six decades. In 1938, while still in high school,
he came up with idea of using two bass drums in his drum set, an addition
that became his signature. Two years later, he beat 40,000 others to win
a nationwide drumming contest. He joined Benny Goodman's band before
he was 20 years old. I love Louie Bellson. If you got a lot of jazz on the
Pablo lable, you got a lot of Louie Bellson's best sounding works.

Bud Shank, 82 who helped define "cool jazz" in the 1950's,
played the dreamlike flute on the Mamas and the Papas hit
"California Dreamin'" and was the former director of Jazz
Port Townsend died April 2 2009 in Tucson. He had a lung
ailment.
Shank was a versitile musician whose 60 year career took
him from the big bands of the 1940's to Hollywood studios.
Along with Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan and the Dave Brubeck,
Shank was one of the prime creators of the West Coast school
of cool, a style of jazz seen as the relaxed, melodic counterpart
of California life in the 1950's
Shank was also amongst the first musicians to make the flute
a legitimate jazz instrument in the early 1950's, and it proved to
be a useful talent once he shifted his career to the Hollywood
studios.
His 33 second flute solo on "California Dreamin", improvised in
a studio in 1965, comes at the songs precise midpoint. Shank
also performed the flute solo on the Association's #1 hit from
1967 "Windy".

Bob Bogle of rock band The Ventures dies at 75

Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits like "Walk, Don't Run," has died at age 75.

Don Wilson, the band's other co-founder, tells The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday.

The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Among its other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O."

The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle played lead and bass and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.

Les Paul died August 13 2009 at the age of 94. What a likeable
and funny man.
