CUMBERLAND, Md. -- With the falling economy, furloughs and layoffs are becoming more of a concern for employees everywhere, the Cumberland Times-News reports.
And one of the local companies having to look at its operations is CSX.
"Right now, 57 employees are furloughed in the Cumberland area," said CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan. "About 47 of those are related to the train operations and the other 10 are on the mechanical repair side of things."
Sullivan said CSX does hope to bring the employees back once the economy improves.
The Cumberland site had about 800 active employees as of Monday (Feb. 23).
"This is really a function of the economy so it's really hard to project," Sullivan said. "And obviously the mass preference would be to have people at work, but it's really driven by the economy and traffic."
Earlier this month, the State Journal reported 37 employees were terminated in Cabell and Greenup counties in Kentucky. Thirty-five of those workers were from the company's Russell facility and the rest were from the Huntington, W.Va., facility.
However, the Journal reported a CSX spokesman said they hope to rehire all the laid-off workers once the economy improves.

Things are picking up..on the East End they've added a couple short pool turns, and an ID turn. Mite shoulda been 2 ID turns, but we'll see next week... West of here they have added quite a few...we had several guys qualifying here, looks like day they get qualified they'll be going back.

Yea Bill Setser and his bunch of goon ass train masters are trying to fire everybody. Under direct order from Bob Frula I imagine....his motto is "i dont care if trains dont move, but we WILL work safe and 100% rules compliant......"
