Idle railroad cars piling up in N.E. Ohio
CLEVELAND -- The recession has caused a deep slowdown in freight train traffic and now as many as one-third of all rail cars are sitting idle, www.wkyc.com reported.

The situation in Northeast Ohio parallels that of the rest of the country say executives from rail companies whose tracks traverse our area.

At the Newburgh & South Shore Rail line near Newburgh Heights, nearly every foot of available rail space is occupied by a parked or idle rail car. Some are from the small local railroad itself, but many are from other railroad lines looking for "parking space."

Danny Evans, regional director of marketing and sales for Newburgh's parent company OmniTrax, says space to park idled rail cars is at a premium and that the situation is especially tough in areas dependent on industries like steel and automobiles.

In Bay Village, a near mile-long train has sat idle on the tracks off Interstate 90 for months. The so-called "auto racks" are two-story train cars that used to transport cars and vans. The idle train is a victim of the local and national economy.

But Joe DiMauro, who runs a dry cleaning business about 50 feet from the tracks, feels like a victim too.

"It really is an eyesore," says DiMauro. "Not only am I dealing with it but my customers are deailing with it on a day-in and day-out basis."

DiMauro says police patrols have stepped up to keep kids away from spraying more graffiti on the idle cars and on the back of his business. He says the sight of the train gets harder to take each day.

Other idle trains can be seen in the Collinwood Yards off the East Shoreway in Cleveland, and in various rail yards in Akron and Canton. Nationally, rail transport is down more than 15 percent over the past year, but in areas critical to Northeast Ohio's economy, freight is down 50 percent in some categories.

It is estimated that across the country more than 200,000 rail cars are now idled. If lined up on a single track, those cars would stretch from New York to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Heard on the news the other day that the forest
reserves in Washington and Oregon are worth
a third of the price they once had. The lumber industry
fills many a car order. Things are bad, really bad.

They are storing coal sets on the museum railroad between Duluth, and Two harbors, MN.

The foamers at the museum JUMPED at the chance to run that train, as they even took a TV reporter with, so she could "blow the horn". Actually, the chick they took is Leanne Wallace, who could totally blow my horn. I think she deserves a spanking...

Those Geeps belong to the museum railroad in Duluth, that is why they are so damn clean. I bet when they got back from the run, they had an Army of foamers with toothbrushes and pipe cleaners to spiff it up again!

That museum has our old GN "Hustle Muscle" thing tu.

He says the sight of the train gets harder to take each day.

He thinks it's hard for him to take? WTH?

That GP30 was repainted a couple of years ago, there was a big fund drive to get people to donate towards it.  It was a ragged out piece of shit when the CN gave it to them.

I don't think that they cleaned those units when they came back, the SOP when I was there was that everyone would come out of the woodwork and want to run as soon as the units were started, but when they were shut down everyone would disappear and leave the dirty work for a select few.

Hustle Muscle is now at a different museum in St. Paul, been there for several years.  I was one of the guys who helped ressurect it and get it running, 19 years ago.

I feel old. Have several slides of BN 6430 passing
Everett depot in GN orange and green. Saw it again
in Montana on the MRL painted BN green and white
and snapped a few shots while doing 60mph on a
parallel highway steering with my knees.

come to think of it, I haven't seen the Hustle Muscle around in a while.  That SOO engine has been given rebirth, so to speak. So...19 years ago huh? Now I see the problem...The fatties think your tu old!

On a lighter note, I was switching with the CN 2427 last night. Complete JUNK. For starters, I couldn't find the fucking handbrake, then bashing my head inside that engine tunnel. GRRRRRRRRR!!!
