Train crew jobs down nearly 10% in year

New Class I railroad employment figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show that the number of men and women employed to operate trains--the official category is transportation (train and engine)--declined 9.57% to 61,333 between February 2008 and February 2009. Total railroad employment in that period was down 3.74% to 156,997. Professional and administrative employment was down 1.34% to 13,642.

Peeked in at BNsf, and UP... Neither one hiring in the mech. depts. A year ago UP had openings across the country.

BNsf had openings at major shops systemwide. Now? Zero!

What changed? Every damn thing! My advice ta anyone trying ta hire on for any openings...whether TY&E, MOW, S&S, structures, communications... Any position at all in any department...

Keep calling. Update your application every three/six months. Let 'em know you're still interested in working for the railroad. And IF you already have a job, hold onto it. Steady employment history is your best bet for being hired.

That, or verifiable military service, and some background education, training or documented experience.

Times are tough, and good jobs are hard ta come by. Persitence pays off. Eventually this freeze will thaw, and the bigs will hire again.

Lear patience. And protect your job. Always protect your job.
