John Madden Retires From Broadcasting

NEW YORK (CBS) John Madden announced his retirement from the broadcast booth Thursday morning. Madden, 73, is a Hall of Famer for his coaching career that included a Super Bowl championship with the Oakland Raiders. But, Madden became a household name for his broadcasting career.

Madden started his career with CBS, teaming with Pat Summerall to broadcast NFL games. He and Summerall then moved to Fox and eventually wound up in the broadcast booth with Al Michaels to broadcast Sunday Night Football games for NBC Sports.

Madden became a popular cult figure among younger NFL and video game fans through his Madden NFL game. The game is routinely the biggest seller of the year for EA Sports who publishes the game. It has featured his trademark calls of "Boom" for years.

John Madden also used his famed Madden Cruiser for years to get from town to town when he was broadcasting because he had a fear of flying.
