Seven extra inning games in MLB since Sunday. The M's-A's 15 inning
game still holds the top spot. Mondays M's vs Texas game, a foul ball
came straight back and shattered the glass protecting the behind
home plate TV camera. M's reliever Shawn Kelly collapses on the mound
after his 3rd pitch with an oblique injury. Texas scores 6 runs in the top
of the 10th. Bees invade Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Lakers and
Celtics both lose in 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs.

All of a sudden the M's can't hit shit, lost 4 games in a row,
dropped out of 1st place. There has to be something going
with the stars.

M's lose 5th straight 11-0 to the Twins. Boston eclipsed
an 84 year old record on Thursday by scoring 12 runs
in an inning before making an out in a game with Cleveland.
A very productive 6th inning at Boston. Bosox go on to win 13-3.
A-Rod homers on first pitch for a 3-run blast on his 2009 season
debut. The word "slump" is likely to be said many times in the
baseball world in the next few weeks.

The Mariners are sinking like a lead balloon. Zero offence, no run
support for the starting pitching, the bullpen has gone south.
Tough situation. Tonight M's-Texas game was a perfect example.
Actually the M's got some HR's enough to make a 4-4 tie and go
into extra innings. Top of the 11th, the M's get a run to take a 5-4
lead. Bottom of the 11th, ace reliever Brandon Morrow serves up
a 2 run double to lose the game. Strange freaky MIR baseball game.
After last year, I know what to do after the game has ended...find
something else to watch fast.

M's closer Brandon Morrow serves up a walkoff hit for the second
day in a row. Fucking Texas Rangers anyway. That club has some
hitters. M's are 0-5 (MIR games) against the Rangers so far (14
more games to go). The M's leap from the frying pan and into the
fire with a home weekend series with the Bosox. Pappy Ortiz admits
he stinks so far this season. No HR's and hasn't been the Pappy of the
past. Hope that continues this weekend. Fucking anything goes when
MIR. The flip flops and flaps.

Mixup forces Rays to bat Sonnanstine
Longoria sits after two third basemen listed in lineup
By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays had a lineup card mixup in the first inning of Sunday's game that cost the team its designated hitter, but at least not the game.
The Rays beat the Indians, 7-5, but not before losing Evan Longoria from the starting lineup.

Immediately after the Indians batted in the first inning, Tribe manager Eric Wedge called the Rays' lineup card into question since Ben Zobrist and Longoria were each listed at third base. Both players had a "5" next to their name, only Longoria's "5" was circled, apparently in an attempt to show he was the designated hitter. Zobrist took the field as the third baseman in the top of the first inning.

"I wanted to make sure Zobrist was in the game playing third, and then I pointed it out to the umpires after the top half of the first," Wedge said. "That's why I waited."

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon smelled trouble brewing when he saw the umpires huddle.

"When they all gathered at first base, my immediate thought was, 'Take your card out of your back pocket,' and I did," Maddon said.

What stared back at Maddon from the scorecard was not a pleasant sight.

"Two fives, five there and five there," said Maddon, pointing to the mistake on the scorecard. "And I said, 'Oh no.' My only concern at that point was that Longo stayed in the game. ... This was unacceptable. I [made a mistake]."

After conferring with Wedge, the umpires walked over to the home dugout and talked to Maddon. Thirteen minutes passed before the decision came down that the Rays had burned their use of the DH, which dictated that starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine would hit third in the order. Longoria had not officially entered the game yet and was available to come off the bench.

"Wedge brought it to the attention of the plate umpire," crew chief Tim McClelland said. "Designated [hitter] has to be designated on the lineup cards, and he wasn't. ... That was just a mis-write, so to speak. ... That's how we interpreted it."

Sonnanstine, like many pitchers, relished the opportunity to wield the bat.

"Bottom of the first, I saw them all meeting, the umpires meeting," Sonnanstine said. "I knew something was up. I didn't know what was going to happen. [Pitching coach Jim Hickey] came down and told me I was going to have to hit, and I corrected him and told him I get to hit.

"I was just excited about it. I was mentally prepared. [Scott Kazmir] brought a helmet and [batting] gloves down to me. So, I just took it as an opportunity. I think Carlos Pena said it best when he said [pitchers] get excited about the possibility of getting a hit."

Sonnastine, who entered the game as a career .400 hitter, attempted a sacrifice bunt in his first at-bat, but the Indians threw to second base for a fielder's-choice forceout. After striking out in his second at-bat, Sonnanstine doubled over left fielder Ryan Garko's head to drive home Michel Hernandez for the Rays' seventh run.

"I thought I caught it square," Sonnanstine said. "I just wasn't sure if it was going to be fair or foul. I was just running as hard as I could."

Sonnanstine left via a double-switch in the sixth inning. Longoria was inserted at third base and walked in his only plate appearance.

Longoria had been initially penciled in as the DH to give him a day off his feet while keeping his bat in the lineup.

"It's obviously not what we wanted the lineup to look like after that happened," Longoria said. "But for [Sonnastine] to come through in that situation ... and like I said, the win is the biggest thing. But he definitely did his job. He got the bunt down, just bunted a little too hard in the first and then the big hit in the fourth."

Despite Sonnanstine's success in the third spot, Longoria, the Major League's RBI leader, said he felt safe about continuing to hit in the third spot "for now."

The Indians were involved the last time such a thing happened, albeit on the other side.

Charles Nagy was forced to bat in the seventh spot against the Jays on July 23, 1999, thanks to a mistake by manager Mike Hargrove.

Manny Ramirez had been listed at designated hitter, with rookie Alex Ramirez playing right field. When Manny Ramirez ran out to play right field following the top of the first, Toronto manager Jim Fregosi pointed out the error and the Indians lost their DH.

Noticed a hell of a lot of extra inning games or bottom
of the 9th games with a walkoff hit or hr lately. The Magic
MIR Boston in the Eastern semifinals of the NBA. The next round
will be under MIR's influence too. Denver take out the Lakers...
could happen. The Magic ruffing up the Cavs? Stay tuned.

I feel for you Troll. Let's see what the Indians can accomplish
in June/July/August without any Mercury or Venus in retrograde.
Of course there will be MIR III in September. Thankfully Oakland
has really tanked or the Mariner's would be in last place. Texas
has to be riding high on MIR, hopefully they come back to earth
after June 1st. Meanwhile the Angels, who took game one of four
against the M's tonight still have a very potent club that can work
their way to the top eventually. MIR has hit the M's hard...from first
to almost worst (thanks to Oakland).

Lopsided loss bad enough, but Sox worried Peavy might be watching
Comments

May 22, 2009
BY TONI GINNETTI tginnetti@suntimes.com
Jim Thome said what the White Sox probably were thinking Thursday after one of the worst defeats in franchise history.

''You hope a game like this won't have any effect on [Jake Peavy's] decision,'' Thome said, knowing how a 20-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins might look to the former Cy Young Award winner, who was weighing whether to approve a trade to the South Side.

RELATED STORIES
PEAVY SPURNS SOX' ADVANCES
''I hope Peavy didn't watch the scoreboard,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Peavy's decision to turn down the trade might not have had anything to do with the ugly outcome at U.S. Cellular Field, but it only added to the gloomy events of the day.

It was bad enough for Guillen to wait out nine innings of misery on the field, with the Sox' pitching, hitting, defense and baserunning all at their worst.

The Twins took every advantage to hand the Sox a 19-run loss for the second time in franchise history (the first came on May 10, 2002, at Anaheim). The damage included four home runs, including Joe Mauer's second career grand slam and a three-run shot by Matt Tolbert, his first homer of the season.

Both of those came off Jimmy Gobble, one of three Sox relievers who mopped up after starter Bartolo Colon (2-4) lasted only two innings. Colon gave up eight runs, but seven were unearned in the second after an error by third baseman Wilson Betemit.

The Sox had no extra-base hits, and their lone run was unearned in the eighth after a Twins error. They committed two errors, and the pitching staff gave up 12 earned runs.

''I wish I knew the answer,'' Thome said. ''You put the work in, but you have to go out and do the job.''

Left-hander Clayton Richard, one of four players the Sox would have sent to the Padres had Peavy approved the trade, instead will make his scheduled start Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. But Richard had to field questions about the possible deal.

''They are just rumors,'' he said. ''It's not anything I can control. I have a start in a few days, and that's what I have to focus on.

''I know there's a business side and things happen for a reason, but you try not to worry about it too much. If I know or didn't know, it wouldn't have any relevance to what happens. You can look at it as someone is trying to get rid of you or someone is trying to get you. So many things go into a trade, as a player, you can't think about it.''

The Sox allowed 20 runs for the 10th time in franchise history, the last also coming against the Twins on July 6, 2007, at U.S. Cellular Field. The loss was the team's eighth in the last 11 games.

''You name it, we did everything wrong you could today,'' Guillen said. ''I'll be positive and say Colon will be real fresh for his next start.''

The Magic/Cavs game. It was a busy sports night on the tube
and I had to do a lot of flip-flopping back in forth between events
with my handy dandy remote. The World of Outlaws sprintcar
race at the dirt track a Lowe's, Magic/Cavs game, and the M's
hosting the SF Giants with "The Big Unit" pitching. Thankfuly the
sprintcar race ended first and it was between the Cavs/Magic game
and the M's. The Magic were behind all game and it didn't look too
promising. The M's gave up a leadoff HR to SF Giant Rowland and a
1-0 score for a long time. Flip to the Cavs/Magic game and it was now
a nailbiter. Flip back to the M's and watching the "Big Unit" dish out
those "Mr Snappy's" that all the Seattle fans had come to love over
the years. Flip to the basketball game and the Magic and see Turkalou
sink a running jumper with 1 second left and take the lead. Figured
it was a done deal and flip back to the M's game. Watched an inning
and flip back to the basketball game just to make sure. Fuck oh dear
Lebron sunk a 3-pointer in the last second to win the game...MIR.
The M's and Giants go 12 innings with the M's finally getting the win.
I got veklempt when "The Big Unit" left the game after a 1-1 tie
in the 6th and took off his hat and waved to the crowd of nearly 40,000
to a standing ovation. Randy Johnson has come a long way. He's a
sure 1st ballot Hall of Famer when the time comes. Will be clapping when
he gets win number 300.

Gawd I'm getting sick of MIR Baseball. M's are leading the
SF Giants 1-0 going into the 8th inning. Top of the 8th the
M's bring in reliever Mark Lowe who's been lights out for the
last 7-8 appearances. Gets 2 outs on 4 pitches and then
the shit dam broke. Giants hang a 5 spot. Unfucking believable.
The Mariners have scored a total of 4 runs in the last 4 games.
These fucking games hanging on a 1-0 lead all day or being
down 0-1 are getting to me. One more week of MIR to go.
Be real interested to see if the bats miraculously get hot in June.
Also the M's pitching staff has gone through the injury bug this
month. Have 3-4 AAA pitchers trying to fill in. Let me be the first
to offer up Carlos Silva and Erik Bedard for a trade. Badard was
a huge acquisition mistake for the M's. What a pussy! "Oh my
leg is sore, my back hurts, my groin isn't just right and please
don't expect me to go more than 5 innings". Just hope the M's
don't sink into oblivion this next week. The offence needs to get
into gear...BIGTIME.

Racing largely depends on no rain. Doesn't matter if it's
your local bullring or a super speedway. Racing is weather
dependent. I've been attending auto races since the late 1960's.
It's always fucking pray that it doesn't rain on your grandeaur
plans for an evening out. While Indy got the 500 in without
any weather woes, the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway
got rained out. Lowe's Speedway in Charlotte holds 168,000
people. Add all the racers, crews, media, and all the others and
we're talking about 200,000 folks that got fucked by the weather.
Not only no race to see but the sitting around soaked to your
panties until very late evening. The race is rescheduled sometime
afternoon on Monday. While the Coca-Cola 600 was to be an evening
race most probably had motel/hotel rooms for Sunday night. Where
MIR fucks things up real good is if you didn't plan for a rainout and
have a flight out of Charlotte Monday afternoon for home. You paid
big bucks for your ticket either for the race or for transportation
home. Blood pressures are going to be high and alot are faced with
an icky decision as to what to do. It's a fucking MIR mess. Luckily for
me, I will watch the race on the tube. I have traveled 1000's of miles
to watch races that got rained out. It's a bitch.
