I've liked Deep Purple from the get go. Have their first
5-6 LP records. Saw them live at Western Washington
University Sam Carver Gymnasium in 1971. It was a
great concert although there was some technical difficulties
as there were conflicts with their European electrical systems.
Anywho...it was a cool concert. Their version of "Hey Joe"
was the best.

This was Pre-Ian Gillian and Rover Glover.

Nick Simper and Rod Evans were in the band at the time. I believe "Hush" was their first mainstream tune.

I need to revise my year to maybe late '69 or
possibly 1970 seeing Deep Purple in concert. Shades of
Deep Purple and the Book of Taliesyn were the only LP's
out at the time of the concert. Gawd I'm gettin old.

Deep Purple certainly were about even with the times
or slightly ahead.

Very cool stuff Krink. I've been a fan of Deep Purple since "Machinehead". I've been a bigger Ritchie Blackmore freak throughout Purple, Rainbow, and recently Blackmores Night.

Maybe I should rephrase that...A fan since the first time I "heard" Machinehead...sometime around '75-'76. Yea, I was young, but my older brothers would listen to "Lazy" over and over.  Almost as exciting as getting Nazareth's "Hair of The Dog" album...

I dug out all my Deep Purple LP's when this topic came to life.
They sat around for a few days. Noticed they are starting to
smell like 40 year old paper products. Played most of them again
for old time sakes. Noticed the group was making a bee-line to
the heavy metal genre. "Burn" is the last one I have. I've always
loved the Jon Lord keyboards. Think he's responsible for keeping
Deep Purple from going whole hog into the metal scene. Yeah
the music is heavy but in it's own different way. Interesting "Lazy"
jumped at me in a new way on a re-listen. It's got blues connotations
like a lot of the British Invasion bands had in the late 60's-early 70's.
I was also surprised to see Deep Purple's rise to fame is 35-40 years ago.
Yep...I'm an old fuck now (with a huge record collection). (and yes
it is a challenge to keep 30-40-50 year old paper/cardboard LP
jackets smelling like new).

Krinker, the "Burn" album was the incarnation of Deep Purple after the departure of Ian Gillian, and Roger Glover, who were replaced by David Coverdale, and Glenn Hughes. Their appearance at Cal-Jam in 1974 cemented them as big players in the rock and roll world. Although throughout the years, Deep Purple has only one "hit", and it still never broke the top 10, or top 20 for that matter. The song "Perfect Strangers" got all the airplay, especially since MTV was a new medium for music. The only "original" member of Deep Purple to withstand all the years of lineup changes was Ian Paice, the drummer.

Ritchie Blackmore was a finicky dude, and wanted the music to go in his direction, and got pissed when it didn't. He and Ian Gillian eventually hated each other so much, Ritchie sometimes wouldn't even show up the concert. I have a DVD called "Hell or High Water", recorded in 1993, the last show Blackmore ever played with Deep Purple. You can see the hatred between the two, especially during "Highway Star" when they play half the song without him. Ritchie comes on to the stage just in time for the solo, gets pissed again, and throws a cup of water at the cameraman directly behind Gillian. At this time Blackmore was top of his game playing wise. His chops were tight, and well put together. Listen to the solo on "Child in Time".

I think I told you I purchased a 1974 Stratocaster from Blackmore some time back. It is the one he played in this DVD. I play it daily, as it's an awesome sounding guitar!

Deep Purple was a favorite band for me in my late teens and
early twenties. One of the first concerts I ever went to and I had
a great time. I have a bunch of their records. Don't really know
what else I can say other than they were a great band of the times.
It's cool that you own that Stratocaster from Ritchie Buckethead.
