TORONTO, Ont. - Canadian National Railway Co. has asked federal Labour Minister Rona Ambrose to appoint a conciliator to help reach a collective agreement with 1,700 locomotive engineers, the Globe and Mail reports.
CN chief executive officer Hunter Harrison said in a recent message to employees that the freight carrier is trying its best to control costs during the recession.
"We are restricting overtime, and we continue to cut back on all discretionary spending and unproductive costs. We've told our managers that there will not be pay increases for them in 2009," he said.
In a letter last week to Mr. Harrison, five union leaders said they're concerned about CN's disciplinary measures.
CN said yesterday that it doesn't comment on such personnel issues.
