A Papua New Guinean woman has told police she drowned her four children because she was fed up with her drug addict husband.
The woman surrendered herself to police and told them she took her four young children to a river in the Western Highlands on Saturday morning and drowned them.
She said she did it because she was fed up with her husband, who was addicted to cannabis and potent home brew alcohol.
But Chief Inspector Kaiglo Ambane does not believe she is telling the whole story.
"We believe there could be other people involved or the children could have been killed before they were thrown into the river," he said.
The children's bodies are yet to be examined.
Highlands police say it is the first time they have ever investigated a case of a mother murdering her children.
