UP TY&E-how to make some money with the new vests.

I'm forced to wear these vest at the shortline I work for, so I've come to know all the dangers of wearing the vest in a railroad environment. And for that reason I refuse to zip up the front of the vest. In fact I think UP is just asking for some personal injury lawsuits with their shortsighted thinking. One of best tricks with the vest is going out the rear door of a locomotive. The door handle will hook into a arm hole on the vest and as you decend the steps the vest will attempt to hang you (don't stumble, it may just hang you). The door hinges on the SD70ACE's also like to snag the vest if you brush against the side of the long hood. There are all kinds of things on railcars that can snag a vest. It's only a matter to time before this rule costs UP some big $$$. In fact, I thought tank tops were outlawed apparel on many railroads for these reasons?

Cool, I'm not the only one who has noticed this.
I'm tired of ruining shirt sleeves on the @^%$&*() things!
I've been known to take the time and go back with a hammer and pound every one of those knife sharp projections down against the hinge where they should have been to start.

This comes up periodically at the LAMCO cab meetings, along with the SD-70 Air Step Notch of Death®.

RIP EM. You used to be the greatest. They are in a death spiral.

We at LINTCO have been wearing those fucking vests for years, but the injuries that have occured were not even remotely serious enough for LINTCO to reconsider it's decision to make us piss green day-glo targets.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if somebody were going to get dragged down a lead by his locomotive-proof vest, it would have happened by now.

Black Dog, if the potential for getting dragged down the lead is there, then it could happen. We must never lose sight that an accident could happen at any time at any place.

The only TRULY safe crew is the one that hasn't reported for duty yet. After all, once they arrive on the property, they become a potential liability.

I hope we never have to wear those stupid vests, though, I can't see the point.

I recall talkin to a friend who drives a truck for a Blacktop construction company. They got a contract to repave so many miles of I-81. The truck drivers had to have thier blaze orange vest on, or the State Highway Official would reject thier load of BlackTop. The drivers never get out of thier truck, but they had to have the vest on.
The Inspector sent a load back, I'm not sure what a dumptruck load of Asphault is worth, But the guy said the drivers all wore thier vests after that...
