New York City police detectives combed through a landfill in Pennsylvania on Friday as their search continued for a 46-year-old woman who vanished from work this week, and the police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, said, We fear the worst.

The woman, Eridania Rodriguez, has not been heard from since Tuesday evening, several hours after she went to 2 Rector Street in Lower Manhattan, where she worked as a cleaner. After fruitless searches of the building complicated by the fact that a subbasement was flooded with two feet of water the police turned their attention on Friday to the Keystone Sanitary Landfill, in Dunmore, Pa., where trash from the building was deposited.

The police also planned to search the Rector Street building again on Saturday using dogs, according to Paul J. Browne, the Police Departments chief spokesman.

Ms. Rodriguez was last seen in a surveillance video around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, pushing her cleaning cart into an elevator, according to a law enforcement source. Around the same time, she spoke with her daughter on the telephone.

At 9 p.m., co-workers went looking for Ms. Rodriguez when she did not show up for her dinner. Her clothes and purse were found in a changing room.

We dont believe Ms. Rodriguez would leave the building of her own volition and leave her property behind, Mr. Browne said. We have no evidence of her leaving the building.

Ms. Rodriguezs family said she had been afraid of a former worker in the building who had been fired but kept returning. The police said they had interviewed several people in the case but had not yet identified any suspect.
