THIS hapless puppy is lucky to be alive after spending two days with a barbecue FORK lodged in his skull.

The 12-week-old Chihuahua, called Smokey, was speared with the metal grilling fork when its handle snapped off unexpectedly at a family party.

He ran into the woods in shock with the end of the FIVE-INCH spike in his brain and did not return home for two days.

Owners Hughie and Billie Wagers, both 32, immediately rushed him to the vets where the fork was removed by emergency surgery.

Incredibly, Smokey is now expected to make a full recovery apart from some loss of sight in his right eye.

Billie, from London in Kentucky, US, said: "Hughie's sister Vickie was outside giving the scraps from the barbecue to the dogs when the accident happened.

"The handle of the fork broke off and it went straight into Smokey's head. He ran away and after that we thought he must have gone off and died.

"But two days later he came walking back up the driveway with the fork still stuck in his head and we took him straight to the vets.

"It scared me half to death looking at it hanging out but he's doing good now even though it went right into his brain.

"We thought he was going to die but he's one lucky dog."

Veterinary surgeon Dr Keaton Smith, from the nearby Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital, removed the fork.

He said: "They came in in a total panic and stated that their dog had been missing for over two days with a fork stuck in his head.

"What the owner was describing was pretty unbelievable but then I saw Smokey and almost passed out with shock.

"I quickly anaesthetised him and put my hand over his head and then just pulled the fork out.

"I have never seen anything like it in 25 years of vetting and I can't believe he has survived."
