The accident was reported inside Tunnel #4 in Stepptown around 5:15 a.m. Thursday morning.

KERMIT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One person has been killed in a construction accident inside a Norfolk & Southern Railroad tunnel near the Wayne-Mingo County Line.

The accident was reported inside Tunnel #4 in Stepptown around 5:15 a.m. Thursday morning.
Members of the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department tell WSAZ.com, that the victim was operating an excavator and working on the tunnels roof when a portion of the roof collapsed.
It took rescuers nearly two hours to reach the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The mans name has not been released at this time.
Firefighters tell WSAZ.com that there is a 40 to 100 foot hole in the tunnels roof. They also say that 50-60 tons of concrete and rock fell in the collapse.
No other workers in the tunnel were hurt.
Firefighters say the man worked for Johnson Western Gunite Construction, a private contractor.
Norfolk and Southern personnel are on the scene, but are not commenting on the accident.

My mother's birthplace.

Tunnel work is dangerous. This is sad. All for six trains a day about six days a week and saving 100 miles or so.

Oh, wait. There's going to be scads of trains, a virtual parade, in both directions. I forgot.

We're coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What really gets me is that Rickenbacker isn't really that big and the tracks aren't all that long, not like you'd think a multi-billion corporation like LAMCO would have done.  Maybe there are property restraints that I'm not aware of.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman says at least 19 freight trains were parked in Roanoke, Va., Portsmouth, Ohio, and other rail yards after the Thursday morning accident. Two others were rerouted after an excavator operator was crushed by tons of falling rock earlier in the day.

And that was 19 trains yesterday around lunchtime...they are still trying to draw down the backup, if they got the tunnel open last nite...

I've seen how they do in these type situations, "the 218 will not be delayed!".  Their first priority would be to reopen the tunnel at all cost.  I just hope they removed the contractor first hmm

19 train backup sounds like a chance for a railfan to make
up for lost ground.
