BNSF freight train derails on main line near Gillette
(The Associated Press circulated the following on December 9, 2009.)
GILLETTE, Wyo. A freight train has derailed 35 miles east of Gillette on a heavily traveled stretch of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad.
No one was injured in the derailment which occurred at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday and BNSF says no hazardous materials were spilled. Most of the 20 cars that derailed were empty coal and wood chip cars headed from Laurel, Mont. to Edgemont, S.D.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said one car was loaded with a hazardous material, an oxide product, put none of it spilled.
It's not known what caused the derailment on the double main line used by 35 trains each day. Crews are working to get the cars back on the rails and the track could open as soon as Thursday morning. In the meantime, trains will be re-routed to the Guernsey, Wyo. line.
