Local 1138 Chairperson Pena dies

Alfredo Pena, local chairperson of UTU Local 1138 at Miami, Fla., died in a motorcycling accident on Dec. 11, CSX GO-851 General Chairperson John Hancock reported.

Pena, 42, was employed by the Florida East Coast Railway for 18 years. He was qualified as a conductor, engineer and yardmaster on the FEC. He joined the UTU in 1993, when train- and engine-service employees on the property were organized by the union. He had previously served as the local's vice local chairperson and was elected local chairperson two years' ago. He also served as a regional peer trainer with the National Labor College's Rail Workers' Hazmat Training Program.

Pena is survived by his wife, Telma, 14-year-old son, Alfie, nine-year-old daughter, Janyssi, and his mother, brother and sister. The UTU Auxiliary's Magnolia Lodge in Jacksonville, Fla., has donated $500 to Telma Pena and the children.

An avid motorcyclist, Pena had been a fixture in the UTU PAC Scott Belden memorial motorcycle rides at UTU regional meetings over the past four years, Hancock said.

"He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My condolences go out to his family," Hancock added.
