Train derails, toxic cloud forces CA evacuations

KEENE, Calif. A freight train has derailed near Bakersfield and one of its cars caught fire and forced the evacuation of several nearby homes.

Kern County Fire Department spokesman Sean Collins says there were no serious injuries in the derailment at 9:30 p.m. Saturday near Keene, a small town about 15 miles east of Bakersfield.

He says authorities believe two train cars went off the Union Pacific tracks at a tunnel entrance on the well-known Tehachapi Loop, and one of those cars carrying denatured alcohol ruptured and caught fire.

About eight homes were evacuated as a precaution after the fire produced a toxic cloud. A temporary shelter was set up at a high school. Collins says the blaze was confined to the tunnel entrance, and crews were letting the fire burn itself out.

Some residents along Woodford Tehachapi Road near the Tehachapi Loop have been evacuated following a train derailment that caused the spill of an unknown, hazardous material, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

The evacuation was ordered within a one-mile radius of the derailment, said Justin Corley of the fire department.

Two cars from a BNSF train derailed as the train entered Tunnel No. 9 near the Tehachapi Loop. One of them caught fire. The call came in to the fire department at 9:33 p.m., Corley said.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the crash and the spilled material.

Fire department public information officer told Tehachapi News photographer Nick Smirnoff that officials would let the fire burn itself out.

A resident reported seeing law enforcement wearing protective masks.

Smoke was seen coming from the area where the accident is believed to have happened.

Tehachapi News contributing editor Carin Enovijas said she saw what could be flames coming from the accident site.

A Kern County Sheriff's deputy told her the spill may be alcohol-based, she said.

Enovijas said the area smelled "like chemicals."

A segment of State Route 58 was closed, and road blocks along Woodford Tehachapi Road at Lower Marcel Drive have been set up.

Upon investigating, Tehachapi News reporter Tina Forde said 15 nearby residences were alerted to the spill.

The Tehachapi Hospital front desk said no patients have been brought in as a result of the derailment and fire.

Smirnoff said fire officials told him seven houses were evacuated.

Leonard Arends of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team said a temporary shelter has been set up at Tehachapi High School for any evacuees.

Cots and blankets are being delivered, and a disaster trailer is being delivered from Bakersfield, he said.

He said he was told hazardous-material clean-up time could take between 12 and 24 hours.

KEENE - CA, - Saturday February 20th 2010 at approximately 9:31 P.M., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department, for a train derailment at the entrance to tunnel 9, on the Tehachapi Loop south of Keene. 18 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident assisted by Kern County Environmental Health Agency, Kern County Sheriff, CHP and Railroad crews.

Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with a cargo train with 2 tanker cars that had derailed at the entrance to tunnel 9. At least one of the tanker cars was involved in fire. According to the train manifest the tanker involved in fire was carrying alcohol.

Due to the nature of the toxic cloud, and as a precaution, local residents were evacuated for a 1 mile radius. A temporary shelter was set up at the Tehachapi High School.

Railway engineers uncoupled and removed the unaffected part of the train.

There were no reported injuries.

LARRCO runs through there on trackage rights, don't they?  I was just assuming that it was a LARRCO train that went in the ditch but so much for assumptions, guess it was Warren's road.

Train continues to burn day after derailment in California

Firefighters work to put out the flames at the site of the train derailment Sunday in Keene, California.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Fire prompts evacuations of at least six homes in rural Keene, California
  • Freight train derailed about 30 miles east of Bakersfield, California, on Saturday night
  • Plastic pellets inside one of the train's cars fuels fire Sunday
  • Earlier fire fueled by denatured alcohol is out

(CNN) -- A BNSF freight train that derailed late Saturday night near Bakersfield, California, continued to burn Sunday as firefighters worked to put out flames caused by plastic pellets, a spokeswoman with the train company said.

Thick black smoke filled the air of Keene, about 30 miles east of Bakersfield, causing the evacuations of at least six homes in the rural town, BNSF spokeswoman Lena Kent said.

No serious injuries were reported. The train's conductor and engineer were the only people aboard the train, Kent said.

The train started its trip in Barstow and was destined for Stockton. It derailed around 9:30 p.m. PT Saturday, Kent said.

The derailment happened when two of the long freight train's cars came off the track near a tunnel entrance, she said.

"The train was carrying freight of all kinds," Kent said. "Unfortunately there was one car of denatured alcohol that burned for a while but is now out, and then there was [a] car of cornmeal, a car of corn syrup and a car of plastic pellets. As we speak, that car is being sprayed down with foam to suppress the fire."

To contain the fire, railroad crews and fire department personnel worked Sunday to remove two of the cars. However, the fire remained burning inside the tunnel.

Firefighters hoped to have the fire out by midnight Sunday, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

The track is owned by Union Pacific, according to spokesman Aaron Hunt.

An evacuation center had been set up by firefighters at a local high school but was closed after no residents showed up, Kent said.

Calls seeking comment from the California Environmental Protection Agency about the air quality in Keene were not immediately returned.
