North County Transit District says about a half-dozen empty boxcars derailed at around 10 p.m. Monday and several toppled onto their sides.
Nobody was hurt but the derailment in a remote Sorrento Valley canyon damaged about 300 feet of track on the north-south line.
Amtrak and the transit district say about 20 morning trains carrying more than 2,000 commuters were affected Tuesday morning.
Amtrak says it resumed its service through the area about 2:30 p.m. Coaster service resumed about a half-hour later.
