Sky Italia said there were six dead in the incident near the city of Merano, about 185 miles north of Venice.
Seven people had been killed, and between 15 and 20 people injured in the accident, Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on its Web site.
There was no explanation for the various death tolls, although differing reports are common in the immediate aftermath of such events.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. Reports said the train possibly derailed after a landslide.
Rescuers were rushing to the scene.
