(The North American Rail Shippers (NARS) issued the following on April 12, 2010.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. Positive Train Control and re-regulation are two timely topics expected to draw record attendance at the 2010 North American Rail Shippers annual meeting at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C., May 26-28.

Both PTC and re-reg will impact customers and rail carriers alike, notes NARS President Allan Roach. PTC is estimated to cost $10 billion. If the government doesnt subsidize that in some way and the railroads still have to do it, whos going to pay?

There are two sides to re-regulation, observes Roach. Some shippers believe it will reduce transportation expenses, while railroads say it will force them to curtail capital spending--just when they are expected to carry more of the nations freight.

NARS provides a common platform for our industry leaders to share their thoughts on these and other hot topics that affect how our attendees do business in the rail industry, says adds Roach.

A favorite NARS feature is the panel of railroad chief marketing officers and subsequent breakout sessions, where attendees can meet and discuss their concerns with railroads individually.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has been asked to provide the welcoming address, followed by Association of American Railroads and Norfolk Southern Chairman Charles W. Moorman, offering AARs perspective of the rail industry.

Other headliners include: Daniel R. Elliott, III, chairman of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board; James A. Buzzard, president of MeadWestvaco Corporation; James Chase, VP/chief specialist government relations for Vestas-American Wind Technology; and Ron Hynes, director of policy for the Federal Railroad Administration.

Fridays keynoter, Eric Starks, president of FTR Associates, will provide an economic forecast and Chuck Baker of Chambers, Conlon & Hartwell will focus on legislative/ regulatory/ stimulus issues.

Additional panelists will discuss intermodal transportation and rail stock performance.

Argus Media will present its 13th annual Win-Win Award," which is given to those companies achieving the most successful railroad-shipper partnership in 2010.

NARS is predicting a record turnout of rail shippers, railroads, investment firms, lenders, and industry suppliers, according to Roach. People come to NARS to hear firsthand what the leaders in our industry are going to do next. They come to learn about our industry, hear from the experts, and network with key decision makers in the rail industry--all of which they can do at a reasonable cost. There is not a better forum in the rail industry to educate transportation and logistics people than NARS and our Regional affiliates, says Roach. Registration is $425. More conference information is available at the NARS Web site: www.railshippers.com.
