Union Pacific railroad bridge nearly succumbs to flooding

(The following story by Emily Collins appeared on the Victoria Advocate website on May 17, 2010.)

VICTORIA, Texas The Union Pacific Railroad bridge spanning Coleto Creek was damaged Saturday as a result of the flooding caused by torrential rainfall.

Union Pacific crews reported to the company's Coleto Creek rail bridge early Saturday to assess damage done to the sand base of the crossover.

According to officials, the rising tide washed away the base of the railroad tracks, endangering train traffic.

Assessment of the damage continues to be assessed as the water recedes.

Crews will begin working to mend the damage done sometime in the next few days.
