Rail Scaresters Face Prison in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. UTU supported legislation imposing fines or imprisonment for vandals who frighten train crews has been signed into law here and becomes effective Jan. 1.

The new law dramatically raises possible penalties for so-called pranksters who interfere with the work of a train crew by placing objects on or near the tracks, said UTU Illinois Legislative Director Bob Guy. We lobbied for passage of this legislation because over the years it became clear to us that there really is no such thing as an emergency stop without damage.

When our crews spot something on the track ahead they suffer terrific anxiety in their effort to stop the train before it overruns the obstacle, Guy said. Once the brakes are set in emergency they have no further control over the trains speed. They know that if the train does not stop in time it could derail and injure or kill them. All they can do is wait and hope for the best.

"Its an extremely stressful situation that leaves crew members shaken even if the train stops well short of the obstacle, Guy said.

Huh. Imagine that. I know crews that've been scared by these.

(Here, I was going to insert a picture of a banner but it seems that everything I can find that might have a picture of a banner in it is now missing thanks to someone who got a whole lot of posts deleted. Or maybe I didn't look hard enough.)

Thank you, FMB. Somewhere, there's a pic of a LAMCO banner but I think it might have been deleted in the great purge of 2009.

Snippy, that's a fact, they're supposed to be reflective but the reflective material wears off in short order from being rolled up and crammed into the back of one of the innumerable white Jeeps that LAMCO purchased in bulk. I don't know why we don't have visible banners but then, I don't know why we don't have advance warning, slow order, and resume boards, either. Safety?!!? HA!

Well, I do know why we don't have them, it would take an employee to put them up and it simply isn't cost effective, so an RFE told me one time.

Save face?  With THEM?  Yeah, right.  Now, I am offended.  Now, maybe Bucket is trying to save face.  Or BD might be trying to improve his attitude with more post totals.  Maybe.

I am looking in the mirror, just don't think the face I see is worth saving. But then, I see Troll at work, and all is better.
