Hard ta figure exactly what the plan for these gals is...but we've begun servicing 'em, and attemping ta start 'em for service.
Dave managed ta start one he'd been workin' on all day.
Now the rest of the gang has some incentive ta return some ta revenue service, after two years storage.
We shipped four outa town on an X-Grainer last nigh/this morn-destined for Glendive.
Hopefully we'll keep a few here ta run in 'shuttle' 'round the Northwest Division. These gals were owned and maintained by BN, they're [were] in coal service before the merger.
They were replaced by the 70 series, albeit gradually. The SD-60s were rated at 3800 ponies, and ran the 710 engines without all the electronic bullshit on 'em.
Pretty straight up air brakes tu. Desktop controls, but straight air under the floor.

Yep, ya can tell there is no electronic control of the diesel engine. Tryin ta get that much horsepower outta a old powerplant is bound ta require constant review and tweaking of the diesel operating parameters. The only thing saving the Gonerail SD60's around here is the cab signal/lsl. They would be razor blades otherwise.
Got one sitting in the backshop awaiting a turbocharger change. The thing sat for two years in our infamou rainy climate, while water filled the exhaust stack, spilled over into the stacks, and engine!
Tried jacking it over...no go. Pulled off the turbo-inspection plate...and saw the evidence... Rusted innards, and rusted pistons/cylinders...
This one will probably gonna cost 'em for not covering the stacks 'fore storing out there!
The damn turbochargers for 'em cost about $18,000!

Yeah...or they used ta have a plan. This particular unit was ignored however. Either the stack wasn't covered from the get go, or the cover was blown off by one or another windstorm we've had over the past couple winters. Then the monumental rains...
Somehow...this one unit's gonna cost 'em a load of bucks. I took a peek at the turbo sitting on the floor back there...and the clutch is frozen [rusted solid], and the exhaust outlet is rusted through!
It'll be interesting ta watch 'em start the thing after the new turbo is installed... I'm sure there's more internals ta be replaced...

Fuck that schitt! Meanwhile the ol'8167 sits in 11 stall awaiting somebody ta make a decision. Ship it/fix it... Or scrap it? Turbo, tubs, and associated piping, intercoolers sitting on the running boards.
The 8107 sits outside the wheel house in the 'dead' line. The rest of the 60 are out pulling trains...is sets of three. Few problems once they began working again!
