Ex-ELO cellist dies in collision

By Associated Press

LONDON: Police in southwestern England say a former member of the Electric Light Orchestra was killed in a freak collision with a huge hay bale that had rolled down a steep hill.

The victim was identified Monday as 62-year-old Mike Edwards, who played cello in the British rock band between 1972 and 1975.

Sgt. Steve Walker of the Devon and Cornwall Police said Edwards was driving a van Friday when he collided with a 1,300-pound hay bale that had rolled down a hill to the road.

ELO Bassist Kelly Groucutt Dies at 63

kellyg_a022009eb_02_200.jpg

ELO bassist Kelly Groucutt died of a heart attack Thursday, at the age of 63. According to the BBC, the bassist/vocalist reportedly suffered the heart attack Wednesday night and never regained consciousness. He passed away Thursday afternoon at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Groucutt, along with cellist Melvyn Gale, joined the Jeff Lynne-fronted group in 1975, just in time for Electric Light Orchestra's 'Face the Music' album. With the new additions, the band, who had already had success with the ballad 'Can't Get It Out of My Head,' became one of the '70s biggest-selling rock acts, scoring immediate hit singles off that album with 'Evil Woman' and 'Strange Magic.'

Groucutt left the band in 1983, eventually suing Lynne, management and other members for unpaid royalties (the suit was resolved with an out of court settlement). Despite the suit, Groucutt went on to play in several ELO spinoff projects, including ELO Part II.

A statement on his official website says, "Our hearts and thoughts go out to Anna (his wife) and Kelly's family. He touched all of our lives with his love, kindness and generosity as well as his talent for music and song. He was a true and wonderful friend who loved every second of life and he will be greatly missed by us all."

Yep...MIR strikes again. He was probly thinking of all the
times he cheated death by excessive drug use and then
a collision with a bale of hay. That's the way it works when
it's your day to go.

Mike Edwards of ELO Killed in Freak Accident Involving Bale of Hay

edwards-elo.jpg

Mike Edwards, who played cello with the 1970's group Electric Light Orchestra, was killed when a 700-pound bale of hay bounced out of a field and landed on his van. Edwards, 62, died instantly.

mikeedwards.jpg The bale of hay rolled down a hill, before hurtling over a 15-foot hedge. A tractor is believed to have been at work.

The accident occurred as Mike was travelling alone near Kingsbridge, South Devon. Upon being struck, Edwards' white Transit hit a smaller van. Fortunately, that driver escaped unharmed.

Edwards joined ELO in 1972. Known for his bizarre costumes and eccentric style, he left the band in 1975 to become a Buddhist. He later changed his name to Deva Pramada, and is believed to have remained single.

Authorities are trying to locate his family. They believe that he may have a brother in Yorkshire, and would like to contact him. Anyone who knows of any relations he may have are asked to contact local police.
