Union Pacific railroad spent $1.28M lobbying the federal government in second quarter

(The Associated Press circulated the following on September 25, 2010.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. Freight railroad operator Union Pacific Corp. says it spent $1.28 million lobbying the federal government in the second quarter on legislation to repeal railroad exemptions from antitrust laws and other issues.

The company cut its lobbying spending from recent periods. It spent $1.66 million in the first quarter and $1.36 million in the second quarter of 2009.

The railroad said it lobbied on the antitrust legislation, a bill to encourage investment in rail infrastructure, automation in the rail industry, user fees, shipment of hazardous materials, and tax implications of grants for high-speed rail service.

The Omaha, Neb., company disclosed the lobbying in a report to Congress on July 20.
