NEW YORK Yes, Amtrak pines for a new, roomier, and more modern Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, but it hasnt written off the century old structure from which its Northeast Corridor and long-distance trains arrive and depart.
On Monday, Oct. 18, Amtrak will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the construction of New York Penn Station, where rare photo imagery, artifacts, and other items commemorating the stations deep and rich history will be displayed.
This anniversary and this spectacular exhibit remind us of our responsibility as the nations only intercity passenger railroad to continue to invest in transportation infrastructure to protect what we have now and to pave the way for future improvement and growth," said Amtrak President Joseph Boardman.
Penn Station also serves as a terminal for Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit, and some 550,000 passengers pass through the station each day, making it the busiest passenger-rail hub in the nation.
