UPDATE 3-Caterpillar unit to build rail locomotives in US

Kelleher CHICAGO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc said it will begin building diesel-electric locomotives in the United States in 2012, a move sure to ratchet up its rivalry with industry leader General Electric Co. Caterpillar's Progress Rail unit said it will manufacture the locomotives in Muncie, Indiana at a massive plant that has been vacant since 1998. The facility will ultimately employ as many as 650 workers when it opens in 2012, the company said. Progress Rail will invest about $50 million to update the 740,000 square-foot (68,748 square meter) facility and to build a test track on the 75-acre (30-hectare) site. The plant was last operated by a U.S. unit of the Swiss engineering group ABB. Until recently, Progress Rail, which Caterpillar bought in 2006, was focused strictly on repairing and remanufacturing rail equipment made by others, including GE. That changed this summer when Caterpillar bought Electro-Motive Diesel, a locomotive manufacturer spun out of General Motors, for $820 million from Berkshire Partners LLC and Greenbriar Equity Group LLC and made it a subsidiary of Progress Rail. EMD's headquarters, engineering facilities and parts-manufacturing operations are located in LaGrange, Illinois, just west of Chicago.

Ain't nothin' wrong with big EMD power... But the bigs oughta lend an ear ta the folks who actually run 'em phor a livin.'

Lots could be improved phrom the base models...and change phor the sake oph improvement is dephinitely a good thing.

Problem is Class-Is want everything phor cheap. And that's why you see many more GEs out there than EMDs.

Big EMDs have an enviable track record, as yet unmatched by GE, whose units are prone ta phailure phar more ophten...

Perhaps CAT will open its ears wider, and learn phrom mistakes oph the past EMDs.

The oldest switchers, Geeps, and big road power (40-2s) are still running aphter 50+ years oph daily use! That ya can't change...merely improve the little things crews want!

I sure do wish with my entire heart and soul that CSX would sell all thier SD70AC Lokos to BNSF, and that BNSF would assign them to Yook's area, with a badgeplate attatched to each control stand that read "to thank the person responsible for these fine Lokos call Yook..1-800-867-5309".
CSX then could buy all ES44AC's and they would never haffta call a helper or get a following train to park and uncouple thier power and shove a stalled coal train because of a 70AC that could not pull a sick boar off a piss pot.
The leaves are coming off the trees and the 70AC are doing just what they are famous for....spinning and jumping. The spinning part aint so bad as the jumping part. Not only are you going top stall, you just might rip the train in a half dozen pieces till the wheels actually stop.
Ya...wonder what Mike Wards phone number is?

In this article I will tell you about a phone call that I, an employee of ten years, made to the CEO and President of CSX Transportation, Michael Ward. I will show you how Mr. Ward sent CSX police officers to my home to check on me, lie to me, stake out my home and portray a false danger to a judge in order to obtain an arrest warrant. I will show you how I was almost shot and killed by two overzealous police officers while CSX officers stood in my hallway watching as I was ordered out of my shower with pistols pointed at my head in order to haul me before a judge, just to sign my own release, and return home twenty minutes later.

I will show you how in their haste to terminate my employment, high ranking CSX officials and CSX police officers ordered me time and time again, beginning the very next day, both verbally and with written, hand delivered sentiments, to violate instructions that were given to me by the judge, as a result of the very warrant they insisted be issued.  These conditions of bail release were conditions that CSX officers themselves personally stood before the judge and asked him to impose. CSX ordered me to violate the judges orders, knowing that it would have resulted in my immediate arrest, and they did it the very next day after having me arrested and continued on for months.

In doing this, they put my life and many of theirs in jeopardy, knowing that it was a situation that required caution and sensitivity. Someone could have been hurt or killed. Fortunately, what I wound up with was further proof of what Ive been dealing with for four years since an incident that has began a long, continuous string of targeted harassment, an accident that took the lives of two innocent people, an African American mother and her nineteen year old son. This company knows no bounds.

Three days after Christmas 2009, I come to a boiling point. Having only worked about twenty days in the last three years due to being wrongfully terminated, suspended or what have you (all of which has been removed from my record due to public law board awards that ruled in my favor), and a constant string of harassment by Florence Division Manager Thomas Wolfe, my stress was mounting. I thought I was handling it pretty well. Its not easy when you watch your own kids have these things effect their lives to the point that they are breaking down emotionally due to the long-term instability of the situation.

I guess the added stress of the holidays and having to buy my kids Christmas with donations, exceeded the amperage on my brain fuse. I had a breakdown in front of my kids, put a gun to my head, destroyed about six thousand dollars worth of computers, televisions and anything else I could get my hands on. I do not do this sort of thing and I thought I was having a heart attack in the process.  My mother come over to pick up my family because they had went outside and called her.  I told my mother when she come in that I thought I was dying because I couldnt breathe and my heart rate was very high.  Due to a stroke, she takes medicine for hypertension, so to make a long story short, I took two tablets of her medication at about 6 pm.

After the medicine hit my head, I got on the computer and looked in the company directory for Mr. Wards personal e-mail. To my surprise, his phone number was there also......[MORE]

I realize I'm coldhearted but geesh, I've never seen how you could work out here and not be or it'd make you nuts. That's about all I've got to say about that. Sort of reminds me of Boat Boy having to walk a train in the mountains.

Knocked the empathy right out of me. Trainmaster Have a drinka the other day unplugged himself from his chemo to go investigate a little derailment in his little bucket yard. It amused me.
