Money For Nothing: Dire Straits Song Banned in Canada

Money For Nothing, a Dire Straits' song, has been banned in Canada because it contains a lyric deemed to be offensive.

The song contains the word "f----t", which a listener found extremely offensive to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The complaint prompted the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council to ban the song.

Money for Nothing was released 25 years ago and earned the band a Grammy for best rock performance.

The accompanying computer animation video, considered state-of-the-art at the time, was also the first music video to air on MTV Europe.

The song was co-written by lead singer, Mark Knopfler, and Sting of british band The Police.

If the song is to be allowed back on air it will have to be edited, the council ruled.

"The societal values at issue a quarter-century later have shifted and the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985," the council said.

Money for Nothing first appeared on Dire Strait's 1985 album Brothers in Arms.

It became an international hit when released as a single, peaking at number one for three weeks in the United States.

It also stayed at number one, for three weeks, on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart.

The little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah, buddy, that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

Knopfler described the writing of the song in a 1985 interview with critic Bill Flanagan:

'The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real. The worker got mad at how much money music artists made for what he considered "not working. In the song "that ain't working" is a reference to him being upset that he worked hard physically and he turns on mtv and see these guys getting "money for nothing, and your chicks for free. "

"the f***ot with the earing" is Elton John with the earring and the makeup and he was the first one with an airplane.

E Js jet was owned by a KY lady, an older person--Mrs Abernathy.

She rented it out complete with crew.  Now she had a ton of money--oil maybe--I'm not sure.
