BLET member dead; UTU member critical
A BLET member working a conductor assignment on Norfolk Southern was killed in a conventional shoving movement accident in Kankakee, Ill., Feb. 8; and a UTU member conductor is hospitalized in critical condition following a fall from a bridge into a frigid river in Covington, Va., Feb. 8 while working a switching move on CSX.

A fellow UTU member is being hailed a hero in saving the UTU conductor's life.

Killed in the Kankakee accident was BLET member and engineer Stanley Watts, age 43, with five years seniority, who was working a conductor job as part of a three-person switch crew at a flat yard. Remote control was not involved.

A preliminary Federal Railroad Administration report said Watts was "crushed" between a car he was riding and another car. Kankakee is some 60 miles south of Chicago.

This was the first railroad on-duty fatality in 2011, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. There were 20 railroad on-duty fatalities in 2010 -- eight of them UTU members.

In Covington, Va., about 60 miles northwest of Roanoke, Local 623 member Alvin Boguess, age 24, fell some 50 feet from a CSX bridge into the Jackson River while part of a three-person crew switching cars into a Westvaco paper mill around 7 p.m. Feb. 8. Remote control was not involved.

According to reports, the train's switchman and Local 623 member Dale Smith, age 48, scrambled down an embankment and into the frigid water, risking his own life, to rescue Boguess, who was face down in the river. Smith is being treated for hypothermia, and Boguess was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital, where his condition is reported as critical.

Boguess signed on with CSX in December 2008, while Smith signed on in November 2008.

CSX still reviewing details of worker hurt in accident

A spokesman for CSX Corp. provided few additional details Wednesday about an accident that injured a railroad employee Tuesday night in Covington. The worker was found in the Jackson River in Covington, Va., on Tuesday evening (February 8), and taken by helicopter to a local hospital.

CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan would neither identify the worker nor describe the circumstances of the accident, which was reported to the Covington Rescue Squad at 7:19 p.m. Tuesday. Covington police said Tuesday that the accident victim was found in the Jackson River near the riverbank in the area of 104 Riverside St.

The full story appears at the Roanoke Times website.

In the line of duty: Stanley L. Watts

CLEVELAND, February 10 Stanley L. Watts, Secretary-Treasurer of BLET Division 354 (Kankakee, Ill.), was killed in the line of duty on February 8 following a switching accident at a Norfolk Southern yard in Kankakee, Ill.

Brother Watts, 43, has been a member of the BLET since February 1, 2006. He was a Norfolk Southern locomotive engineer who was set back working as a conductor at the time of the accident. He is survived by a wife and children.

He was working as part of a conventional switching crew consisting of an engineer, conductor and conductor-in-training, and had gone on duty at 6:00 a.m.

Kankakee is located on the Dearborn subdivision at MP KS103 and approximately 59 miles south of Chicago, Ill. The yard is a small flat switch yard with approximately 20 tracks.

The BLET Safety Task Force is on the scene as part of the accident investigation, along with officials from Norfolk Southern and the Federal Railroad Administration.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Brother Watts, said Dennis R. Pierce, BLET National President. On behalf of the entire organization, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Brother Watts.

More information regarding funeral arrangements for Brother Watts will be made available as soon as possible.
