...boss mentioned it earlier this eve... Chicago's sending two of 'em out here for us ta put in service.
They're rated at 3600 ponies, on four axles. Old SF units...
BN only bought six axle SD-60s, but the engines, electrics, motors, brake equipment are all pretty much the same on both series units. The engines are pre-EFI 710, turbo engines.
Big diff? The six axle SD are rated at 3800 ponies. Most of the major parts are easily interchanged between the two types so Interbay should be okay workin' on 'em, and maintaining 'em.

Yep! The traction motors are geared for higher speeds than 'drag' service. Santa Fe ran 'em on their lines from LA ta Chi Town just before the marriage...intermodals, and straight pigs. Once they got outa the LA basin, and onta flat rails nearing Barstow, the 60s started ta show off! Little bastards could crow!
I just hope that these girls haven't been 'in storage' for several years... Otherwise it's lotsa work ta get 'em pulling again! Like our fleet of 75s, and SD-60s...

Worked one earlier on my shift. It was equipped for loading, but not braking/sanding, etc. Ran it for an hour while I took my lunch, then started loading it slowly. The roughest spot was N-5... A bit of shakin' and vibration. After that she smoothed out, and took off!
Self load monitor said she was putting out 3800 ponies! The blue card showed rating at 3600-HP! What the hell...200 extra. No big deal!
The roho boys brought out a SD-60 ta load test, and we coupled it in, hooked up MU cable, and air. I got my air, and checked sanders... Kept it on-line ta run up with that SD... Lotsa noise! Both howlin' like raped apes!
Figured they'd pull something with 'em, but test machinist for the SD said he found an exhast base gasket leaking...and the compressor leaking oil... Bet him $5 they'd just run 'em out 'cause they have tu many units out right now, and tu much OT...and they called OT for day shift before we left.

SD 60s were rated at 3800-HP. Geep 60s were originally rated at 3600-HP. I think the four-axle unit are a tad light for 3600 horses, but what do I know?
The 60 series power had EMD's best wheel slip control system. It allowed a wee bit of 'creep,' which actually read ground speed by radar, and compared the actual axle sped constantly adjusting input/output...
They'd pull at higher speeds than older Geeps because of higher gearing and better controls.
