A few words about coolant

Like Clavalina sez...it's a mixture of shit. The mix is largely water 85-90%. The additives are usually in liquid form, and include sodiums, borates, and a few other silicates. Most of 'em are added because the pressurized cooland impinges upon cast iron parts of the engines.

GE's FDL-7, and EMD's 710s are welded steel, but cylinders, heads, water pumps, and water piping are cast iron. And they are the parts vulnerable to wear most. Hence the additives.

The railroads have been experimenting ever since they adopted diesels back in the 1940s... And yes, they did try ethylene glycol. Mixed with plain ol' water. It worked. But the cast iron still wore away...

The experiments led to barates, a common water softener used in large quantities in steam power plants. Same reason. Soft water...

The colors...are tracers for leak detection. BNSF uses a highly reflective retro green dye.Cool. It glows when exposed ta 'black' light. Easy ta spot internal/external leaks!

Borate ain't perfect, but it seems ta work...when an engine stays running. All diesel engines like heat. Workin' 'em is best ta keep 'em hot.

Ambient temps below 40F...not so good. But don't let 'em idle their lives away either. They gotta be worked! Or they die...or freeze ta death!

MARRCO used some kind of lavender looking shit. It must work better cold because we have to shut our engines down if we are away from them more than 15 minutes. I imagine starting them and shutting them down does those engines loads of good!
