Just off the ticker...

Massive fire after 3 trains collide in Porter County; residents evacuated

CHESTERTON Three westbound CSX trains crashed about 1:30 Friday afternoon, causing a massive fire and damage to passenger cars in the area of County Roads 600N and 500E in rural in Jackson Township.

Emergency personnel were hampered by the inability to reach the fire, which poured smoke and flames hundreds of feet into the air. The heart of the fire is between two large open fields with no ready access.

It appears that the first westbound train stopped or slowed and was struck by the second, then both were hit by a third train.

Residents who live within one-half mile of the crash have been evacuated from the scene.

As a precaution, officials considered evacuating nearby Jackson Elementary School, but didnt because it was time for classes to dismiss. The school contacted parents for children who live in the evacuated area, Duneland School Corp. administration assistant Lynne Jenks said.

Ambulances transported two patients to the hospital and medics were looking for more.

Looks like a wb ethanol train on 2 got rearended by a freight, and the intermodal was passing them both on 1 when the rearender occurred.

Derailing cars derailled intermodal...

Sounds like 2 minor injuries please God..

Rest easier, men:

Members of the UTU Transportation Safety Team have joined investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration here following a collision and derailment involving three CSX trains Jan. 6.

Also, UTU Reports:

two westbound trains collided when the first train stopped and the second struck it from the rear. A train headed in an unknown direction on a parallel track subsequently rolled through the debris from the first crash.

Snippy joins *cy* in not iwshing this shit on anybody.

Amazingly there were no fatalities. Judging by the pictures and videos I was certain we lost a brother/sister. Cal is correct on what happened. The crew on the intermodal is from my home terminal and I know the engineer well. Very good engineer and is known as one of the best. Dude knows a lot of stuff. I know he'll probably get tired of telling the story but I sure would like to hear it soon. The crews on the other two train were based out of Garrett, Indiana. Just amazing nobody was killed.

Power seen in the video is, I assume, off the junk freight train that rearended the ethanol train. I saw that power and thought, oh, not good, older power and they'd been in real trouble.

Update:

Train crash responders sickened, likely from food they were served

VALPARAISO Numerous first-responders to Fridays three-train crash became violently ill over the weekend, and possibly from an unexpected source: the food.

Chemicals spilled from the freight trains, including ethanol and diesel fuel, the latter which fed fires sending up enough smoke for emergency personnel to evacuate an area one mile to the north and east of the crash site, northeast of Valparaiso near County Roads 600N and 500E.

 From the story:

Meanwhile, a Chicago law firm already is advertising, via the Internet, that it is searching for anyone injured by chemical exposure or whose property was damaged in the crash, for a potential lawsuit.

Calvin sez:

Fawwkin glad I'm not the Hawg on the Freight train that rear-ended the Ethanol train and started the whole fiasco. Looks like someone(s) have figgured out theres some money ta be made.

Sandwich shop worker infected food eaten by train responders

VALPARAISO The Jimmy Johns restaurant on Lincolnway in Valparaiso was the source of the gastroenteritis that sickened a number of emergency responders to Fridays fiery train collision, the Porter County Health Department said Wednesday.

The Health Department also noted the restaurants local management is cooperating fully and voluntarily closed the store while it was cleaned and disinfected. It reopened for lunch, staffed with employees from other stores.

More than 60 people reported experiencing the illness, marked by vomiting and diarrhea among other symptoms.

While emergency responders who were at the crash site began reporting symptoms on Sunday, the Health Department began receiving similar illness reports on Monday that were not related to the CSX train wreck response, according to the Health Department news release.

County and state public health nursing staff interviewed affected people and tested samples at a state laboratory to determine the source of the illness.

As opposed to actual food poisoning, where the food itself causes sickness, gastroenteritis can be spread by an infected individual preparing food for others.

The Health Departments investigation has shifted to focus on Jimmy Johns employees, who are being tested for gastroenteritis and will not be allowed back to work until they are medically cleared.

None of the individuals who became sick required hospitalization and all have or are expected to make a full recovery.

If you feel you have been affected by this food-borne illness, maintain hydration by drinking plenty of liquids and eating a bland diet. Consult with your healthcare provider if the illness persists beyond 72-hours or if fever develops, Porter County Health Officer Dr. Maria Stamp said in the news release.

The spread of gastroenteritis can be minimized by practicing good hygiene, including frequent hand-washing.

Anyone with the gastroenteritis symptoms who works in health care, day care or food preparation is advised to remain away from work until symptom-free for 72 hours.
