I've been able ta RUN the machine, and clean up mant types of wheel defects, from size-mismatch (On six-axle units), ta slid-flats, ta shelling, WILD wheels, high/thin flanges...and other wheels needing reprofiles.

On the maintenace side, it's all been very rudimentary. Greasing all the bearings (Weekly), ta indexing the cutters (After 60 cuts), and daily-look-sees...

Beyond that... Thirty-plus years from Hillyard Diesel apprenticeship on an antique machine, ta Interbay, where I half-assed picked it up because nobody else wanted it... Enjoyed the challenge tu! But this machine was installed in 1978, after BN bought it used.

Since then, there've been probably 30-35 guys who ran it. Some more carefully than others. And some who cared for the machine, and others who just did it because they were told ta cut wheels. And only a few were really versed in all aspects of the wheel machine.

I learned it from the best. Gordy McCoy was the de facto wheelman for twelve years at Interbay. I spent six weeks learning from him. The finer points of truing... When he went off on disability, I spent a few shifts alone back there, testing myself. I did okay...

But the current day shift wheelman Jim V., taught me the most. Gordy taught me basics. When I asked about maintenance, he said "Just grease it once a week, or more if ya cut a lot...and check the oil!" Nothing about how ta refill the gearboxes, or where anything was! I guess he figured he'd do everything else himself.

When he went off... Jim V. bid the job. He'd worked it a lot on weekends when Gordy was off.

Graveyard shift...a serious stoner Danny ran the machine while smoking weed... So it's been operated differently by a series of guys. Some respectful, some not...

Now, Ranger Uke alerts us to a drug problem at the Interbay Diesel Shop. He is trying to deflect us away from his previous testimony. It won't work. We'll initiate a Rule G fact-finding on Ranger Uke. Please remove him from service.
