I got this the other day.  I guess there is no helping some people...

Yesterday, a train came into Kirk Yard and an FRA inspector got on the engine to see the train's wheel report for hazmat endorsements. Upon boarding the engine, the inspector notices the Conductor's cell phone is plugged into an outlet, charging. When asked if the phone was on, the Conductor said it was off. Upon inspection said cell phone was found to be turned on. The Conductor in question has been removed from service and will likely be fired. The CN will be fined from what I heard and they are not happy with this. And a test blitz will surely follow looking at cell phones on CN trains.

I can NOT stress this enough, TURN YOU PHONE OFF WHEN GETTING ON THE ENGINE and leave it off until you've vacated the engine. If you see your Conductor fooling with his phone, tell him to turn it off. The GM is raging pissed and will happily fire anyone violating the Federal cell phone ban. Please, for your own sake comply with the cell phone ban.

The iPhone cannot be charged with it turned off.

It comes on when you plug it in.

I am sure that will buy some leniency from the FRA and LINTCO.

Uke's antique cell phone thing (Jitterbug) will not receive, call out, text... Never mind that. It has no text feature anyway. But it will not do a damn thing while charging. Except charge. The battery. After that, it can receive, and call out. The 991 feature works then tu!

I thought that Uke reported awhile back that he could now receive texts. Now, I learn that Jitterbug does not receive texts. At least, the Jitterbug that serves Uke, when not lost in his fleet of modern vehicles, does not receive texts. That explains why Uke never responded. OK.

Meanwhile, at LINTCO, nobody is responding.

The moran of the story is the guy who plugs it in to charge.

He's already violated the "stowed and stored" provision of EIEIEIEIE026 a/k/a 49 CFR 220 Subpart C.

Ha! A local chairman Snippy knows had this problem and called Verizon to complain. They denied it. Then he sent them a letter about how much he value his job. Off means off. On means fired. Fired means a loss of millions for him and his family. Then they got him a new phone without a penalty.

Why would you even charge your phone on a 73v DC outlet?

Because using an inductance coupled transformer where the wires automagically don't touch, you can actually derive 5vDC front the 74vDC locomotive supply.

You need ALTERNATING CURRENT to make the induction practical.

With DC current the magnetic flux only spikes once when you turn on the DC and once when you shut off the DC.
