Making the news:

Two eastbound train engines collided with each other in Gary early Sunday morning, scattering dozens of train cars off the tracks in the Miller neighborhood.

Gary Fire Department Battalion Chief Donald Williamson said two engines traveling east collided with each other, apparently because of faulty switch gear, near Old Hobart Road and Miller Avenue.

One of the crew members suffered a broken leg. He and another person had to be extricated, Williamson said.

Reading what little I've been able to find, it may be that the loaded train the South Shore was shoving into the siding from (possibly) their side, derailed in front of the CSX train. Maybe. Perhaps we'll learn more later.

"We were, uh, shoving into the siding. The paperwork I got from the yardmaster said we were good for the room. I guess there was an extra car in there somewhere....I told the fat son-of-a-bitch to stop before we went over the derailer."

First off, I spoke with the conductor and he is fine as well as the hogger. I don't know who got a broken leg but it wasn't anybody on CSX. From what I gather, the South Shore was shoving an empty hopper train from their line to a siding that parallels our main. Routine move that is performed several times a week. At this siding there is a hand throw crossover at the west end and a power switch at the east end protected by signals. Apparently, while the South Shore was shoving they derailed at the hand throw crossovers. I don't know yet what caused them to derail. The Q010 (The hottest of hot UPS trains on CSX) just happened to be approaching this location moments before the derailment happened. A passing westbound saw what was going on and tried to alert the Q010 but they couldn't get stopped in time. Crew walked away with just a few scratches. They were lucky.
