Two separate fires last weekend a day apart destroyed railroad ties stacked in the BNSF Railroad yard on South F Street, an Arkansas City Fire Department official said Monday.
The railroad ties were in two piles of 30 each and were to be resold to a subcontractor of BNSF, said ACFD Capt. Jon Cannon.
The fire department responded to the first call, at 2:58 p.m. Saturday, and put the fire out within 20 minutes, Cannon said.
Firefighters responded to the second call shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, and found that the same two piles of railroad ties were on fire, he said. "We used 2,000 gallons of water and foam to extinguish the fire," Cannon said.
"There's a lot of creosote on railroad ties, and when they burn, it (emits) a lot of oil. That kind of fire is hard to put out."
Causes of the fires were undetermined, he said.
A BNSF official who is the spokesman for Kansas-related issues was not available Monday to comment on the fire.
...and that official would be?
