Got to give the NS credit for their "re-creations" of all the fallen

predecessors. Jersey Central Line was "The Central Railroad

Company of New Jersey" looking at my Dec 1966 "Official

Guide of the Railways". Well you all know the story.

A photographer from Railroadforums.com captured

this shot. Henry Davis shot from Steele Alabama.

Think Uke may get goosebumps.

The ol' Elizabethport Diesel Shop is long gone, having been razed ta make way for the third runway at newark International Airport...now renamed something else, which does no justice to its past, or acknowledges Newark at all!

CNJ, like more'n a half-dozen other railroads were bankrupted by the PC meltdown, and dependence on interchange with the former, was lumped inta Conrail... Conrail was run by the Feds, which all but rehired the PC 'team' headquartered in Philly, ta run the newly formed outfit...

When CR began ta show strength, after shedding redundant lines, downsizing, and beefing itself up...Uncle Sam let it go private, and CR began paying off many debts which hadn't been included in the PC bankruptcy declaration...

NS and CSX were in a proxy fight over CR, and when the dust settled, NS took about 55%, and CSX got the rest...

I didn't care at the time, because I had an offer from BN in Portland, OR at the time ('79) I left E'port behind! They'd started me as a laborer, awarded me an apprenticeship, laid me off, called me back...laid me off again. Called me back... I was startin' ta feel like a fuckin' ping-pong ball.

I was gonna head out ta Portland in Mar. 1979, when I stopped ta visit another 'Jersey Uke in Spokane... He said they (BN) have a big diesel shop on the north side...

So I went up there, Hillyard Diesel (former GN steam shop) and met with the machinist LC... He sent me ta see the big kahuna downtown, who hired me as a laborer...then I got a machinst apprenticeship. My date goes back ta July, 1979, at Spokane Seniority District.

All history now... E'port Diesel Shop pic:

I'm pretty sure Troll and Phreddie know all about this little mishap, which kinda set the CNJ back a bit, and may have been a cause of its demise, along with the PC bullschitt!

I remember that one... Pretty well. My family was still living down there... The old man was determined ta get us outa the city though. Eventually he did... But 'Jersy's my home, and sometimes I still miss it...of course anybody knows that ya can't really go home again!

The 'home' ya remember...is only in your head! And the older ya are...the more home changes...

Stock in Conrail wasn't offered until Conrail went private in 1987.

Before 1987 Conrail was a Government owned railroad in rebuilding mode.

In 1987 after a strong push by employees of Conrail to "Let Conrail be Conrail" , and not be split up between NS and CSX,

the Govt decided to let Conrail go private by selling stock and using that money to finish paying off govt loans.

The price was $28 to $31 dollars a share.

10 years later in 1997 when CSX and NS started talking about a takeover of the wildly successful Conrail by simply

buying a majority amount of Conrail stock, its shares were worth around $60 bucks a share.

The Conrail board was ready to accept CSX's bid of $106 a share for the whole shootin match, when NS made an offer of $115

a share cash. This made the Gonerail shareholders force the board to not make a deal with CSX and go with the NS

offer to hack Conrail up.

Remember that LAMCO made an offer of $1.2 Billion while Lizzie Dole was secretary of Transportation.

AndAHA!! My recollection comes back... Thats when CSX came out and said they would abandon the basically entire Baltimore and Lake Divisions

if NS got the sale. They said there would be no way to compete. that was back in 86-87. The resulting stalemate made

NS withdraw, and dole to change her mind to let the public get the offering.

The 97 takeover was simply a high bidder event. (altho CSX still wanted the whole thing.)
