Mudslide comes down on Z train in Everett...caught on video

Here's the lastest...."Mud" on the BNSF Scenic Sub between Seattle and Everett.

I find the BNSF getting very creative with what looks like a specially made "Mudslide

picker-upper trainset" using motive power on each end of the 6-car "deep-well" stack

cars. Whats really cool is that the backhoe can move across the top of the cars as they

fill up.

Trusty Gus has eyes all over 2LARRCO's extensive network of rails, held another news conference yesterday, reassuring a nervous public that BNSF intends to remediate the situation. Soon.

The gathered throng breathed a collective sigh of relief after Melonas' words...

This situation aint going away. The BNSF is so furious about the situation
that you can be sure that their legal team is going make a serious dent into
all the insurance claims the railroad can muster. The railroad has been plying
this route for over a 100 years. Just about all the population that settled in
on the cliffs/banks above the railroad have contributed to the "collapse".
In the meantime, BNSF is "fleeting" trains in one direction or another when
the tracks are clear of mud. Amtrak on this section is by bus most of the last
6-weeks. Be interesting to see if BNSF jumps out out nowhere and wants to
buy back the old NP line from Ballard to Snohomish. During my employment
on the BN, I saw a detour of some trains on the Woodinville Sub back in....
"Z" trains of the day lead by GP-50's since the Woodinville Sub was
"GP" only territory. I'm just observing whats happening every day just like
the rest of youz. This is not a good thing right now on the BNSF Scenic
Sub between Seattle and Everett. This line is like 2 subdivisions in one.
The Seattle East to Chicago and Seattle North to Vancouver BC go this stretch
of beach. There is a sense that this could be an endless fight right now
with the all the rain that never seems to stop for long.

Maybe 2LARRCO will re-buy and relay Snoqualmie Pass. It was one of the few things the poor old "Milwreckee" had going for it.

Shades of the Wellington snow slide!!!

Close up the John Wayne trail??

Cascade tunnel up on Stevens pass doesn't have the avalanche worries of Snoqualmie.

I guess BNSF is between a rock and a hard spot.

Cant run thru the ocean, or build on top of the "Fault line".

IIRC Snoqualmie was an easier grade the the NP's Stampede route. I think also it endured fewer snow slides than Stampede due to it's position in relation to the sun. But Stevens Pass with that big hole in the side of the mountain has the edge on avalanche protection.

BNSF already has 2-routes to get Seattle traffic east in WA St.
The MILW is not what is needed right now. Its the Vancouver BC to
Seattle/South traffic that has no alternative at this point with the
re-occurring slides on the BNSF Scenic Sub. I worked on the BN/BNSF
for 26 yrs in this locale. I've seen/heard of mudslides on this stretch
many times in a quarter century but nothing like whats going on now.
This locale has recieved up to 60 inches of rainfall in 2012 and 2013
is keeping with that pace so far. Seems pretty certain that the mud
is going to keep coming down with the unpresidented rainfall fueling
the whole mess. This line is also an important Amtrak and Sounder
link. Both have been disrupted so many times in the last 6-weeks.
They have a 48hr ban on passenger traffic after a mudslide.

Why do they call it a mud slide? Shouldnt it be a crust slide. (its not just mud, there is also rocks and minerals and wee creatures involved.

You can call it what you want Calvin. Just know trains have to wait for
the "what-you-call-it" to be cleared from the railroad tracks before
rail-traffic can resume.

Ole Warren would be pissed if he had ta buy all that slide fencing that would be needed to protect his trains and the employees who operate them sufficiently.
