Well, it's no surprise to me, look at who among us has departed the industry:

2012 safest year ever for railroads

Published: March 12, 2013
WASHINGTON  2012 was the safest year in the railroad industrys history, according to new statistics from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). In 2012, compared to 2011, the train accident rate per million train miles dropped 19 percent, the employee casualty rate fell 9 percent and the grade crossing collision rate dropped 8 percent.

According to FRA data, from 1980 to 2012 the U.S. train accident rate fell 80 percent and the U.S. rail employee injury rate fell 85 percent. Since 2000, the declines have been 45 percent and 52 percent, respectively. Train collisions per million train-miles dropped 87 percent since 1980 and 36 percent since 2000.

While railroads saw gains in the other safety categories, trespassing deaths increased in 2012. There were a total of 847 reported cases of death or injury to trespassers in 2012, up from 778 in 2011

I'm not sure FRA counts retrees, and their leaving rr service as a quantifiable contribution ta safety... Most of the outfits seem more'n happy ta shed us. FRA doesn't follow up on retirees for their opinions, thoughts on safety, or suggestions.

Sure it's an opinion on my part, and my scope is narrow (mechanical), but working on the railroad shouldn't be a life or death job. All of us have ideas, and most of our ideas have been well thought out, and we have the experiences to back 'em up, but sadly neither FRA or the companies we left, ever asked us about our day-ta-day jobs...

They didn't care what you thought when you worked there so why would you think they would care now. You're out the door, mister.

Of course, Snippy advised the Crete-Cracker how to make a recommendation to the FRA via FELA claim after his Crete-cracking... The internets were not working.

They failed to provide a safe workplace by not using readily available safety appliances:
