The most glorious March day in the GPNW with temps pushing 70 degrees
and I'm heading back to a place I stood one week ago and missed by 15
minutes +/- a 3-wide shot of 3 trains. My Higher -Self is showing me some
love as I get that series of pix that I wanted.

Get to Lowell and see trains parked and I'm going "not again" but "yes
again". I'm in the right place and time to see the EB Amtrak Empire
Builder passby the BNSF freight duo. I feel blessed. I may visit there again.

So this Saturday the EVESPO (Everett-Spokane) actually gets to
follow Amtrak #8 eastward. The light will get better at Lowell
later in the PM as we get to summer but Saturday it was "light
sculpture" effect on the passing train. Treetop/brush shadows
making the locomotives look different, the paint, BNSF loves
a stand-out paint-scheme and the "BNSF Swoosh" and I have
to agree they look pretty sharp.

The GPNW side of 2LARRCO must be just a tad power shy lately... Yep! I've seen TWO sets of SD-60s out back in Balmer Yard on the 'ready' track, and there are one, two...sandwiched in in a couple of your pics... Easy ta tell EMDs from GEs in several ways...

Those damn 60s were a pretty reliable replacement for, and supplement to BN when we ran nothing but EMDs on the ol' Northern Lines. Watching five big 40s pull a stacker, or Z-train outa Seattle, fly through Interbay, across the draw...and up the coast...

That was a kick, especially knowing we put the power together, seviced it, tested 'em, and made damn sure everything worked!

Now it's all GE, all the time! But occasionally...they'll sneak an SD-60 inta the mix! The RoHo boyz tell me they've readied several lately, and maybe one or two 75-Ms as well!

This lash-up of ex-BN power is still in my favorite color of green.
It's amazing that 18 years after the BNSF merger, that we still
have quite a few locomotives running around in green and white
and Sante Fe Warbonnets. At this point in time I dont know what
is more valuable. Since I hired out on the BN, I have to go with
an all BN lashup as maybe more of a catch. This train I shot last
weekend so it's current events. This power has been assigned

to 627, the train that comes down from Bham to Everett and back.

When I hired out on the BN in Everett in 1973, Delta yard was
doing the things they've been doing since the diesel era. Delta
Yard became a place where boxcars got cleaned, meaning empty
40' boxcars with grain or a lot of "dunnage" or any other shit
got sent empty to Delta Yard for a cleanout. Remember in my
youth seeing painted on a GN boxcar..."when empty return to Delta".
OK so I took a picture of Delta Yard in 1973 that perfectly depicts
the yard. I dont remember the year that the "cleanout function"
of the yard ended but it did. Probly early 80's. So Delta yard was
now a 14-track yard...only one little thing, they never built a track
10. Forever talking about Delta 10 track was a just fucking with
you just to see if you remember. But they eventually did put in a
Delta 10 track so now we got a 1-14 track yard. Not pictured
in this post is the tru "by-pass" of Delta Yard and that being the
ex-NP route around Delta Yard known as the Rodgers Main-line.
All the Amtrak trains use this route. The new Marsh Yard at Delta
Yard was built to handle the kind of traffic now going up the
BNSF Bham Sub. Coal trains, oil trains, or any train that has
to re-crew however long that takes. Need to be able to park
a train. The Marsh yard needs some finishing touches as only
Marsh 4 and 2 ready for trains. Wont be long before the Marsh
Yard at Delta will have 4 trains parked ready to go north.

Another mudslide at Everett derails the last 3-cars of the WB Empire
Builder Sunday Morning. It rained a lot Saturday night maybe 2" and
this troublesome area around Everett Junction let loose again. Second
time this winter 2012-13 that the mudslides take out a moving/passing
train. When it's an Amtrak train its a serious thing. Sunday I awoke to
steady rain, puddles in my lawn and gravel driveway which means it
"really raining out". Turned on my desk-top Bearcat scanner in the
house a little after noon. Hear Amtrak train 513 still on the airwaves
way past his time of travel fumbling around Everett still. First clue
that the coast-line was out of commission. Wasnt til about 3pm on
KOMO radio 1000 I first heard of the slide/derailment to the Builder.
So things start to make more sense now after listening to 10hrs of
the "railroad channel". I was just missing the derailment of the last
3-cars of the WB Amtrak Empire Buider info before I turned on one
of many of my electronical devices.

This is a drill Everett has gone through several times this winter.
I love hearing "railroad situations" on the radio. Its just part of
who I am. It's what I got paid to do for 26 years. "Railroad
Situations" "figured out on the radio". Need to figure out a way
for it to stop raining all the time in the GPNW.

Last Sunday (4-14) the sun was out and a good time to venture out
with my camera. Sat-Sun are the only days I can do this as the roadways
are clogged with traffic Mon-Fri. I can actually get around Everett pretty
good on the weekends. I favor Lowell just because it has a great vantage
point and you can stand on this pedestrian overpass all day if you want
and nobody will yell at you. I found in the last 3 visits to Lowell something
seems to be sitting there with no-crew. The BNSF must be making money
over fist to let a stack train sit for 3-4-5 hours crew-less. Actually I heard
part of the story on the radio. EB stacktrain relief crew gets aboard about
16:00 hours and sez they are ready to go. Dispr comes back with you
are there for Amtrak #8 and 2 WB stack trains. Well not good news for
the stacktrain, it meant more photo opportunities for me. So here is a
BNSF meet of stack trains at Lowell.

I just remembered that my Advance Editor button doesn't work.

Sante Fe paint still generates enthusiasm from most rail
photographers. After the BN merger in 1970, every unit
on the roster got repainted cascade green and white by
1973. After the BNSF merger in 1995 it was like they
plan to order so many new locomotives that the paint
scheme would ever evolve into a proven winner. That
explains the nearly "X" amount of BNSF paint schemes
has running around its system right now. I favor the
"BNSF Swoosh" scheme...looks sharp. So while I was
in Everett Saturday I just happen to catch a "Sante Fe"
unit on the point with the paint job holding up nearly
20 years later powering this WB Z-train through town.

This is truly the 21st Century on the BNSF Bellingham Sub.
I grew up in Bellingham and what I saw rolling through town
in the 60's-70's-80's wasnt coal and oil trains. Its like the
BNSF Bham Sub is one of last "unexploited frontiers" now.
The BN/BNSF have been running coal trains up to Roberts Bank
on a almost daily basis for 20 years. But now you got 3 each
way a day that could turn into 9 each way a day. These oil
trains are heading to Anacortes right now but the Cherry Pt.
refineries up in Whatcom County are quickly building facilities
to handle oil trains.

So I made it to the pedestrian overpass at Lowell to capture
pictures of the "latest business" trends. Empty Oil and Empty

Coal trains. These empty trains have a priority status to get

back to where they are loaded. Notice they dont hang around

town for very long.

The one mile long BNSF Tunnel underneath Everett is one of the great
mysteries for most railfans. The West portal is the most accessable today
although I have photos of the East portal with trains and lived to tell about
it. This video I just found is what I would take if I was taking video today.
The Everett Tunnel was less than a halfmile from the BN Depot where I
worked in the 70's. "Ding-dong" was heard in the depot when a westbound
train entered the Everett Tunnel. The good old days.

"Heatwaves" added to any photo subject makes it "cool".
I dont have many "heatwaves pix" in my collection. Rarely
do you get a chance to see it in the GPNW but I somehow
seized a slender window of opportunity in the last few
outings. First pic is Everett, the rest are from Snohomish
about 7 miles east of Everett. Long distance zoom shots
that capture the heatwaves. I love it.

Still wondering why the hell GN didn't have more foresight to avoid the botttle-neck that towns and cities like Everett, Snohomish, and perhaps Mulkilteo would become... Then again who'da thunk this region (GPNW) would grow as it has in the past 50 years?

Maybe that's precisely why Hill & Co. built 'em here! After all GN, NP and UP "opened" the West for exploration, and resettlement!
