Howarth Park is a fairly new creation for a "CP" just south
of Everett Jct. Another chance to "cross-over mainlines"
before/after Everett. I have a lot of Amtrak pictures from
Howarth Park and I finally got one changing mailines.
I can never remember but I think main 2 run along the beach.
Main track one is next to the bank. First digital pics from
this location. Its such a perfect place to watch trains but
you have to contend with beach-goers and people walking
their dog passing by you while you are looking down the
tracks. If you can time it right you can end up with 5 trains
in an hour. This location better on a weekday with less than
glorius weather and less glorius people.

This westbound Z train usually meets AMTK 8 at Monroe
but Saturday AMTK was late. So this usual meet happened
at MP27-28 Mukilteo instead. The BNSF westbound Z-trains
always have 5-units on the point. The Santa Fe way.

Not exactly sure what you mean Uke. Here it is in a nutshell.
With the current mixed in with the future 2013, Everett and
Auburn are emerging as the dual points of interest with
handy eastward lines over the Cascade Mountains. Tacoma
has a lot to offer and Auburn crews could do that. Everett
has taken on that role from Interbay where a train is called
about the same time every day to move "accumulated" traffic.
That is what plagued Interbay over the years and now BNSF
has farmed out out the freight classification to Everett and
Tacoma. Seattle will always have a hefty crew board but
man-power now has some choices. I mentioned the "K-Crews".
The K crews are all like intense "inner-city" running. Railroad
territory with a million signals and lots of delays.

The ol' NP had their chance, and the blushing bride just waiting on the sidelines... The Milwaukee. Left as an orphan by the BN merger of 1970, the Milwaukee finally threw in the towel in the GPNW and terminated in Miles City, MT. To never again run further west!

Freddie you got to be some sort of psychic. Yes it was a 80 degree Saturday

and the park I thought might not be packed was packed when I got there.

The incoming tide was making the beach less and less and all kinds of brave

persons swimming in the salt-water. Lots of summertime activities and

summertime wardrobe. My plan was to be there early enough not to miss

pictures of AMTK 8 at 5:35PM. Well AMTK is woefully late so I hangout at the

top of this pedestrian overpass/outlook for what I hoped would be 30 minutes

but it turned into an hour and 30 minutes. Plenty people pass me as they

climb the stairs to get down to the beach or climbing the stairs from the beach.

So I notice this one chick maybe 20yrs old with some really short/tight jean

shorts on and she went down to the beach. I look like a lifeguard on duty

from anyone one the beach from my perch and I "have a camera". I spent

most of that hour and a half looking a specific point of land where a head

light might emerge from Mukilteo. This 20yr old I mentioned with the tight

jean shorts passed by and asked me if I took her picture. I said that I dint

take any pictures of you. I'm taking train pictures. She said that I should

never come back here as she walked away. What a cunt. Actually after

looking through "mind footage" of my stay, I think she was smoking a

cig with friends in a park that bans smoking and maybe she was worried

about that. No beach-goers on this day that would be something to

rub one off tuu.

Sante Fe paint still generates enthusiasm from most rail
photographers. After the BN merger in 1970, every unit
on the roster got repainted cascade green and white by
1973. After the BNSF merger in 1995 it was like they
plan to order so many new locomotives that the paint
scheme would ever evolve into a proven winner. That
explains the nearly "X" amount of BNSF paint schemes
has running around its system right now. I favor the
"BNSF Swoosh" scheme...looks sharp. So while I was
in Everett Saturday I just happen to catch a "Sante Fe"
unit on the point with the paint job holding up nearly
20 years later powering this WB Z-train through town.

The 724 was built in 1997....I remember these 700 series were brand spanking new....They sported the Santa Fe on the nose but the side of the engine read BNSF....These were supposed to be some kind of "herritage series" engines......I always thought it might have been an old SF guy that ordered these engines and had the Santa Fe put on the nose as a "fuck you!" to the merger.....

Got an 8200 series unit on the Balmer "office lead" right now... BNSF 8264. A SD-75M. Originally built as Santa Fe 970 something, and in the classic "Warbonnet" scheme!

Now she's painted in an older version of BNSF orange/green...and renumbered.

I always await the next major railroads need for extra
locomotives and where they come from. I got a lot
NREX locomotives in trains before 2008. That whole fleet
never to be seen again. So where will "horsepower by hour"
come from in 2013? Who has a rental fleet today.

NREX is still around. www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx">www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx...

Although GE and EMD probably will "lease" units ta the bigs on short, or long term basis. They likely own a good portion of BNSF's fleet of newer GEs already. Surely UP does it the same way with newer power. Long-term leasing seems ta be the way ta go in the 21st. century. Cheaper ta lease than own...

Interbay "rebuilt" many a leaser from NREX... Especially EX-UP, and CN/CP power back in the '90s. The worst? UP SD-50s. We put traction motors under 'em. Engine components, like turbos, full sets of dynamic brakes (not easy), brakes, air compressors (freeze damaged...) just ta get 'em in service! Few were lead qualified. They were cut in for the horses and tractive effort as needed!

GATX also leases a small fleet... Progress Rail leases EMDs on a limited basis... NS is rebuilding older power at their big shops. CSX... Repowering older stuff, and leasing as needed. Plus they've got many Conrail units stored yet!

Railroads will only buy big power IF they really need to. BNSF has more locomotives right now than they currently need... Pretty certain that they've laid up many at "warmer" locales.

Class-I outfits have more locomotives than they need right now!
