Easter weekend and the weather is not clear blue but BNSF Everett is a
beehive of activity on Easter Sunday. Something must have happened
during Saturday night because it seemed I heard the same train
mentioned twice in a 6-hr period. 2 Everett-Albina (UP yard Portland)
and 2 Everett-Pasco trains departing within a 6hr period. Then add
the Everett-Spokane making up their train. 2 loaded coal trains north
and 2 empty south. Several northbound trains to Vancouver and it
was the 3-ring circus that I know Everett to be most of the time.

So I just listened to all this on my rr scanner Sunday. I worked as
an operator for many years in the area so when a train calls and
asks for anything, I got a visual in my mind of what is wanted.
So during all the rr traffic moving around through Delta Yard,
I hear a Everett TM calling this northbound loaded coal train on
the radio. I'm thinking this is no big deal..maybe the TM has a
new wheel of the train to deliver or something like that. No it
was something I never heard before. The Everett TM@Delta
(this is something new since I left. The TM's were stationed at
the Everett Depot away from the yards so you dint have them
breathing down your neck as a yardmaster or regular fixture
in the yard office. Well times have changed as the Delta Yard
office/roundhouse complex has really changed to "big-time"
yard now. Everett has become "Interbay North" now.
So I hear this TM call the coal train and say...I got you on
(this and that) and its going on your record and thanks
for your efforts and have a safe trip". I mean the radio
goes silent for several minutes. Actually I heard the same
TM nail another train coming into Delta Yard an hour earlier
with the same "you've been busted on some rule and I saw
it" and its going on your permanent record and have a safe day.
Usually when a trainman gets busted for something its "day over"
but now the BNSF always interested in keeping the trains moving
have gone to a "traffic citation for employees" approach.

Well more the normal everday radio conversations going on Saturday at
BNSF Everett. Saturdays and Sundays can be jam-filled of traffic.
The last few Saturdays I've ventured into Everett to get some more
Ida-logs and take a tour around the facilities and take a few pictures
but this Saturday I had lots of Ida-logs on hand and the weather was
heavy rain at times and dark grey skies. Not a day for picture taking.
So I've been listening to the scanner all week to get a better idea of
the current operations. I can tell you that Everett isnt recognizable
today from what used to occupy radio chatter during my days there.
More on that later. So about 2pm I hear the BNSF Bayside Yardmaster
instruct the "10 engine lite-power" train to run to the north end of
Bayside Yard and wait. Next was the "Annie-power" from Delta Yard
that needed to go to Bayside to get on their train and they had
"6-units". So if it were a beautiful sunny Saturday and I was making
my rounds like the last few weekends, I would have photographed
a 10-loco lash-up working with a 6-loco lashup while they get thing
sorted out. Yep...thats the stuff that happens all the time in shitty weather
or darkness.

I've been noticing that a lot of the coal and oil trains keeping their
same locomotives and train-set for several "loops-around" from
the Powder River Basin and the Brakken Oil field in North Dakota
and back to the GPNW. The BNSF has so many locomotives that
you have no hope to photograph them all. In fact since 1996 I'd
say every BNSF train I saw on the Seattle-Chicago mainline the
power I would never see again. Since BNSF became to be they
seem to have about 3000 unit fleet that just floats from one
place to the next without a town needing it to return to .
Interbay/Everett takes in all-comers for run-thru or fuel needs.
I have no sense BNSF has any locomotive assignments for
most of its fleet. Its like "I'm here...service me". Thats for the
big road fleet. Now Everett is a center for the "GP" units and
a fleet is maintained here. Interbay and Tacoma and Auburn
and Everett all are in what I'd call "Geeps 2014" . So many
locomotives in the same BN paint they were born with.
Its turned out to be a great thing as you can have a pair
of re-built GP-30s in BN paint still switch your industry
just like in the old days.

They've begun seriously renumbering older units to add to the road fleet. Much of the road power built in the'70s-'90s reflect this. More often than not, shops have simply chopped the first numeral off... Especially noticeable on local (Northwest) SD-75s. They've lost the 8 from 8245, or 8257, to now live as 245, 257, etc. Same holds true for the former BN SD-60s. They became 8100s in BNSF's roster. On BN they were 9200s from day one of purchase.

Now they've also lost the 8...to become114, instead of 8114, and so goes the remainder of the older power. This reflects a move by corporate hqs. to integrate big, new road power into main line rosters.

In other words, BNSF has no imagination when it comes to numbers. Why not just use the number(s) of retired units ta begin with? BNSF shed damn near every GP-9, GP-7, SD-9 years ago, and switchers which had been originally number with two digits on GN, NP, et al, became three digits on BN.  Why not use those numbers? Go figure...

Prime example of their renumbering game:bnsf 242.jpg

This hyperlink gives a pretty good idea of current models, and numbers (count) of each model/type that BNSF owns, or leases. And here's more for ya ta peruse, but check the dates of the pics, because they may not be up ta date! However this one (SD-75) is...notice that they just painted over the 8!

The very last visit ta Interbay Roundhouse, there sat an SD-60 which had been renumbered to 4114. BNSF must be doing some really strange shit with numbers. The 60s stick to a particular route, pulling garbage trains into, and out of Everett, Seattle, and Tacoma. The journey (full) ends at the Roosevelt Landfill, run by Republic Services.

These former BN SD-60s were originally used in coal service, and BN ran 'em hard 24/7 for years. They definitely got their money's worth outa these units. This pair managed to escape. For now...

I'm happy to be in a position to respond with your last post Uke about the
SD-75M's. Saw the BNSF 265 at Bayside on 4/26/14. Yep all they did is
paint over the "8". Also I'm not sure how many of the SD-75M's recieved
this BNSF paint job. Thought most still running were in red-silver Santa fe
paint. The SD-75M is sort of rare I think with only 76 produced between
1994-99 and all went to the Santa Fe and BNSF. Think they must be up
and running again whatevers left cuz the BNSF is power short. Also had
occasion to get some good shots of BNSF 8110-8112 around Everett.
They are operating out of Everett right now on the Gold Bar Turn which
is a Mon-Fri local.

So what's the difference between an SD75M and an SD75I? The isolated cab? LINTCO has about a 200 SD70 and 75's. They are quiet and speedy but don't lug worth a damn.

More railroad radio "interceptions" from Tuesday night as I hear a TM
call what I think was an eastbound train leaving Lowell. BNSF TM to
XXXX east. XXXX east over. Just want you to know your speed was
good (35mph over the grade crossing at Lowell) and you whistled
properly...over. XXXX east replies thank you..out. I cant tell you why
when I hear a TM on the radio "out-there" talking to a train crew
like that, it just seems the whole terminal goes on their best radio
behavior for a while. This is the second time I've heard this TM in
action. He is scary.

 CSX has :

SD60.......standard cab Loco

SD60M....Safety cab (widebody) with desktop control stand, mechanical air gauges and Loadmeter with old mechanical air brakes.

SD60I.....Isolated cab/ICE screens in Widebody cab with desktop control stand, electronic displays and electronic air brakes. (Isolated cab was to protect the unproven delicate electronics)

I'd be very comfortable claiming the same application for the SD75M and I, I'm not sure if a SD75...(standard cab) was ever built/sold.

LINTCO SD75I...wide body isolated cab, conventional AAR control stand with mechanical gauges and 30 cdw brakes. Slippery as hell.

I noticed the CN coal trains to Prince Rupert as being that "3rd"
coal train each way daily when that service began a couple years
ago now. CN power was on most of those trains but I've noticed no
more CN power on the coal trains passing thru Everett the last
year or more. So what happened to that business? Is it still going
only BNSF power does it all today? Well it was a question I had as
to whats with the Wyoming coal trains going to Prince Rupert BC.
for a while. Well I found out some new news on that CN coal train
now being rerouted Shelby MT to Sweetgrass AB. So it looks like
BNSF is running 3 coal trains up to Roberts Bank a day and of
course 3 empty coal trains back a day. If the CN train was still
going this way it would be 4-each way a day..wow.
