Remaining BNSF SD40-2's
Permalink

BN/BNSF had a huge fleet of SD40-2's somewhere near

a 1000. Lots of leases expired over the years and a lot

of BN painted locos are now running trains in other parts

of the world. So whats left on the roster now having been

re-numbered into the "1600-1900" series. Have to think

a good running SD40-2 will be of help to moving any train.

So I came across "BNSF 1973" at Delta Yard. Still has most

of its BN paint glory intact and still a surviving locomotive

that BNSF wants to keep running. I just happen to have

a couple photographs of BNSF 1973 in it's original CS 922

colors which were BN. The SD-40's re-released in the GPNW

are about 4-5 so far.

A few have been relegated ta "hump" service at Balmer Yard. During the period of '97-2003 we saw most of 'em (8000-8100), all very late models ta BN disappear. That bunch were really strong runners in pool service, assigned to Interbay, or Northtown.

They ran a "circuit" almost always returning to the "owner" shops for service/maintenance, and the occasional repairs. They were the best power outa La Grange! They were straight forward ta work on, with everything placed so that shop forces had all materials ready for 'em when they showed up. Workin' under 'em, on 'em, or inside those babes was cake.

Running 'em however... Crews didn't seem ta mind when they got four or five pulling eastbounders towards Chicago. Guess ya coulda had worse than all SD-2s... Maybe like HP GE Dash-7? A consist of -7 power... Nooohh!

It looks like BNSF has tossed the remaining SD40-2's in
with the demoted SD60's for branchline service. Not a
bad group to take over the heavier local trains of today.
