It's all about money. What else?

A look at the long waiting times under Canadas health-care system

September 9, 2013, 6:24 PM

At the risk of feeding into the Obamacare frenzy, there are some videos from the Health Council of Canada that are worth a look for those who want to see how they really practice medicine north of the border and how theyre trying to make it better.

Sure, these are bound to bring dire warnings from those who vehemently oppose President Obamas health-care overhaul we wouldnt have it any other way but we offer these as instruction on the trials and tribulations of true socialized medicine, which is quite different from what weve had in the U.S. and also quite different from what were about to have with Obamacare.

The main difference is in wait times for medical procedures; some talk of waiting nearly a year for an orthopedic procedure, a queue that never would be tolerated in the U.S.

Here, the Health Council, a non-profit organization that monitors Canadas care system, talks of how that nation is trying to reduce wait times and make the system more responsive to patients.

The most recent video is below. Others are on the Health Councils page:

There are long wait times for healthcare besides surgury. Our healthcare system is plugged up by people who use emergency rooms for simple shit like colds, minor cuts and abrasions or seasonal flu. A lot of these people have no simple grasp of english or french and are here visiting their niece or nephew for an extended period of time or are here illegaly. Yes here in Canada we have illegal citizen's too, and here in Canada we can't say NO or get the f@$k out

It's tough ta say "No!" when somebody's genuinely sick, and really needs help. I didn't realize that Canada had an "illegal" problem though. Honestly.

I've been aware of the "buying citizenship" initiative that exists in Canada. Show up with $50-K to "invest," and you're in... Then you invite your extended family, and they are eligible "dependents" as well, and entitled to everything else as Canadian citizens. The kicker? You, the newest immigrant must support 'em!

We've got a similar deal here as well. I might even give it a shot... Oh wait, I'm already a citizen here! Damn!

Hey...maybe I can get inta Canada too! I speak English, but I'd hafta brush up on French though!

Court dismisses landmark Charter challenge on behalf of homeless Canadians

Judge says legislatures, not courts, are the place to combat homelessness, but lawyers say the ruling denies justice to the poor.

Homeless people have been denied their day in court in the wake of an Ontario Superior Court decision that dismisses a landmark Charter case, say lawyers who vow to appeal.

This case is about the fundamental principle of access to justice in our society, said Tracy Heffernan, of the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, which is representing the applicants.

By denying them the chance to present their evidence, the court suggests that poor people cannot rely on Charter protection, she added.

The Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA) and four Toronto individuals launched the Charter challenge in May 2010.

They claimed that homelessness and inadequate housing violate human rights under sections of the Charter that guarantee security of the person and the right to equality.

They argued that Ottawa and Queens Park are violating the Charter by failing to implement policies that would reduce and eventually eliminate homelessness and substandard housing.

As a remedy, they wanted the court to order the governments to develop national and provincial housing strategies to address the crisis.

But in May 2012, federal and provincial lawyers filed a motion to stop the case.

In a hearing before Justice Thomas R. Lederer in Toronto last spring, they said the Charter does not include a general right to housing, nor oblige governments to provide social assistance and housing support.

In addition, economic and social policies are political matters beyond the scope of the court, they argued.

In his 52-page decision Friday, Justice Lederer sided with Ottawa and Queens Park and agreed the case is misconceived and cannot succeed.

Who could not be sympathetic to any proper effort to confront the issue of inadequate housing in all Canadian communities? Lederer wrote in the ruling.

The question is whether the courtroom is the proper place to resolve the issues involved. It is not; at least as it is being attempted on the application, he concluded.

But without hearing the evidence, how can the court know the case is misconceived, wonders Leilani Farha, of CERA.

This decision, if allowed to stand, denies any protection under the Charter to the most vulnerable groups in Canada those devastated by homelessness and inadequate housing, she said. We welcome the opportunity to have these critical issues considered on appeal.

The federal and provincial governments were reluctant to comment on the decision as it is still subject to appeal.

But a spokesman for the Ontario government said the provinces long-term affordable housing strategy sets a strong foundation . . . for those who need safe, affordable housing.

A spokesman for federal Employment and Social Development Minister Jason Kenny pointed to the Stephen Harper governments Homeless Partnership Strategy.

Steam is correct in his summary analysis. And some M.D.'s encourage this careless abuse of the system by repeatedly dispensing useless prescriptions for antibiotics to people with the sniffles and other such nonsense. Statins, lifetime anti depressants for the bored stiff, pain killer abuse ain't even funny no more. Don't even go there.
