Can rail infrastructure get back on track?

THE FIRST TIME a chunk of concrete from the scarred and pockmarked 86-year-old 25th Street Bridge in South Philadelphia rained down on Ed Penna's car and cracked his windshield, he sent the repair bill to CSX Corp., the Florida-based transportation giant that owns the lengthy overpass and controls most rail freight on the East Coast.

He said CSX laughed that off.

So the second time it happened, the labor leader just went ahead and paid for it. And the third time.

Now, after about a dozen years working in the shadows of the crumbling overpass in the Ironworkers Local 405 hall at 25th and Reed, he's almost gotten used to it - that clanking sound and the way the whole building shakes when a 100-car train hits the brakes overhead. And his fear that a concrete slab might kill a pedestrian one day.

I reported a overhanging piece of that with a vertical crack. The railroad lopped it ophph before it could kill someone... I am disappointed that I haven't been invited to testify in front of city council.

Heck, they even want Philly to be safe, I like the way it says, including Philadelphia.

CSX places the highest priority on the safety of the communities in which it operates over its 23-state, 21,000-route-mile network, including Philadelphia.

I drove under it today, they have contractors out chipping away at flaking concrete. That will be a retirement job...

He was too busy looking up and ran over a sharp concrete flake.

We all know that the concrete is just cosmetic. All prestressed (steel) bridges poured with concrete from that era are in the same boat. water gets in the tiny cracks, freezes, making little cracks big cracks and so on and so forth. The concrete is really there to protect the steel. Back in the day when PRR built the overhead everything was fancy and had Roman Columns and Arsty Fartsy thingamabobs hanging out all over. Ya see how bridges are built today, everything is flat, or has a brick looking relief cast into the side. This is so water cant get in, and if it does the cracks are less visible hid in the relief shadows of the brick pattern.

What can be done about the 25th st bridge?

Tear it out and run the trains down the middle of the street like they used to. Ya,...that'll fly.

Start a Rennaisance in Philadelphia. Tear down all the shit buildings and use them as fill to fill in under and around the bridge and make it an embankment. An embankment to separate the railroad from the streets like they did down on the Alexandria branch. Would people piss and moan about losing the street?  Well if yer afraid of concrete squashing ya youre probably going another way anyway.

With the increased use of south Philly yard the bridge aint goin anywhere.
